Stampers and Scrapbookers---I need your honest opinion

My MIL is a card designer for a major rubber stamping company as well as a rubber stamp distrubitor/demonstrator for Stampin' Up.

I am interested in designing rubber stamps myself, since the ones I've seen all seem to be fairly simple and I do have a little drawing talent.

My thought was this: I've seen all kinds of rubber stamps because she literally has THOUSANDS of them. But what I haven't seen is a line of rubber stamps for geeks--Star Trek, 80's movies, punk rock, etc.

Is this a concept ripe for the plucking or am would it not fly with the stamping/scrapbooking community in general?

Since you will be distributing them and selling them, if you go with Star Trek and 80s movies etc. That line will need copyright privledges which is why they are probably hard to find if they exist at all.

As far as punk rock and that kind of thing, go for it you never know what people are buying

I voted heck yeah because I would love to see 80's stuff. And my boys all have mohawks this summer so the punk stuff would be perfect.

I would like to see stamps that aren't all cutsey all the time.

I didn't vote in your poll (sorry) - didn't know what to answer. But I saw you talking about this in the geek thread in the CB (I'm a lurker there). I instantly thought of Etsy - the crafters community where you set up "shop" and sell your stuff. Because your MIL doesn't think your stuff would be a seller, if you know how to make your own rubber stamps, you can test them there. I have seen some really great rubber stamps on the site.

About your topics, I agree about the copyright stuff... I'm a closet geek that is a child of the 80s, but I'm not sure even I would buy movies or show stamps from the 80s because I wouldn't have a use for them. Maybe if they were more general like shapes of arcade games, tape cassettes (for mix tapes), etc. That would be more helpful. The punk rock thing is being done by Cricut in their Indie Art Solutions Cartridge - check it out. It might give you some ideas, as well. Good luck!

I see a lot of punk/grunge stuff in the digi scrapping world these days. I don't see why it wouldn't translate into stamping. I'd stick with more generic 80's icons or punk/grungy stuff to avoid copyright stuff and appeal to a broader audience.

one of the carts for the cricut is "indy" where it has guitars, skull/crossbones and that sort of grunge thing. I bet the idea would transfer over to stamps also.
