Lovin' the Magic ~ Part 2, Animal Kingdom, A Visit to the Poly and Shopping at DTD {Aug. 14th, 2006}!

One word can sum up this day ~ HOT, HOT, HOT!! OK, that was 3 words but seriously out of the entire trip, this was the most unbearable day! :faint:
We did everything in our power to stay cool, followed all the tips I had read ahead of time (misting fans, lightweight clothing, tons of water, tried to stay out of direct sunlight, etc.) but I have come to the conclusion that there is some kind of invisible barrier around Animal Kingdom that prevents any sort of breeze from coming through, LOL!

To start this day, we had wanted to get up and get to the bus stop early for EMH. This did not happen, LOL!! I seriously underestimated how tired everyone was going to be on this day. We had driven about 7 hours or so the day before and then stayed for EMH at MK ~ none of us got to sleep before midnight and those kids were not rolling out of bed at 6:00 for all the Mickey Bars in the World! :mickeybar

We did manage to get everyone up and about and down to the ASMo bus stop by around 8:00 after a quick breakfast in the room (we had brought cereal bars, pop-tarts, etc and I used a Snack Credit in the ASMo gift shop for a 1/2 gallon of milk which was enough for my kids plus the rest of the kids in our group so that was great!).

As soon as we got to AK, we split up and my DSIS and BIL took the older kids and went straight for Fast Passes for Kilimanjaro Safaris and I lagged behind a bit with my MIL because she can't move so quickly. We had my DD7, DD9 and DNephew7 with us and were just kind of strolling along to catch up with them when all of a sudden, we run right into a Stitch Meet and Greet!! :stitch2: I know a lot of you are completely burnt out by Stitch but as I mentioned in Part 1, my DD7 is borderline obsessed with him and my nephew is a big fan, too. It was a great way to start the day for them. We were the last ones before Stitch had to "go help Lilo catch some waves" but we got a great picture!

By the time we got through that line and Sis and BIL were back with the FP's, MIL was already getting hot and tired so I wanted to do something she could sit and enjoy and she positively loves birds so we saw Flights of Wonder. Now I have to say, I honest to goodness thought this would be a boring show but it was extremely impressive from beginning to end ( they get you hooked before you even go inside with the little intro that they do outside of the show area).

When FOW was over it was time to start walking back to the safari. I was very impressed with the safari ride and the theming as well...Disney goes all out for everything they do and you feel it everywhere! MIL was pretty sore after the safari though (I did not realize how bumpy it was, LOL or I would probably not have had her go on but I still think she had a great time even after she thought she was going to be bounced right out of the truck, LOL!!! Anyway, after the safari, it was already getting close to noon so we decided to head over to Tusker House for some lunch (I did a dining report in that forum if you'd like to read it but for here I'll just say YUMMY).

After lunch, MIL had decided that she could not make it the rest of the day with us (she does not tolerate the heat well and couldn't really enjoy the parks so she missed out on a lot of the sights but she found lots of other things to do while at WDW and she made friends with the CMs at ASMo and she went and got herself a temporary tattoo at the pool one night and had cocktails and chatted for a couple of hours with the bartender another night...we tried to keep her as involved as possible but being that she's been hospitalized more than once for dehydration, we didn't want to push it). So at this point we walked her back to the center point of AK and she went back to ASMo for the day.

After MIL left, we kind of just wandered to some of the shops, did some shopping and the kids found the place where they let you beat on the drums outside ~ they thought that was the coolest thing!

Our last attraction for the day was Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends. This show was so much fun and it brought back so many memories for me (don't tell but I actually got choked up here, LOL). When my oldest DD(13) was a toddler, her room was done in Pocahontas and she loved the movie, the characters, everything. I remember she had this Grandmother Willow piggy bank that would talk when you dropped coins in and she thought it was the most amazing thing so when Grandmother Willow started talking up on that stage, my eyes welled up from the memories. OK, maybe I'm more of a sap than I'd like to admit, LOL! The toddlers in our group were in complete awe of the animals here (the adults were pretty impressed, too). I highly recommend seeing this one!!

Oh, I almost forgot ~ while we were waiting for the next Pocahontas show to start, we were hanging out on some benches in front of a little wooden hut and all of a sudden a CM walks up to me and says, "I'm sorry but she needs to get down from there". I turn around and DD7 has climbed the wooden pole outside the hut and is halfway to the top. Embarassed, I tell him I'm sorry and quickly get her down only to have the same CM come back a few seconds later to tell me that DD11 needs to put her shoes on her feet while she's walking around ~ OK, at this point I'm starting to wonder if heat sucks the common sense right out of kids or what!! I've got one climbing poles and one walking through AK barefoot...talk about mortified! Anyway, the CM is being such a good sport about all of it and laughing with us and he asks where we're from. When we tell him Michigan he's totally shocked and says, "I figured running around barefoot you had to surely be from the south!". He had to take a break while we were still waiting and when the CM to relieve him arrived, he was telling him to keep an eye on us, we were a bunch of troublemakers and he didn't what we would do next, LOL! He was laughing the whole time and chatting with us and even though I don't remember all of the details now, that will be one of my fondest memories of WDW for years to come!

Unfortunately, this was pretty much it for our day at AK. The kids were seriously overheated and we didn't want anyone getting sick so we started to head out ~ we ended up running right into the Jammin' Jungle Parade and got to see several of the characters from that ~ very cool! Even though we didn't have as much fun at AK as I had planned, I was still very glad we went and can't wait to go back.

On this day we had ADRs at 'Ohana for dinner and it was for around 5:20 so we decided to hop the AK bus to the Poly. All I can say about the Poly is WOW! We got some beautiful pictures here and the girls found tons of souvies in the gift shop. Dinner at 'Ohana was wonderful as well (dining report in restaurant forum).

Our last adventure for this day was a trip to DTD! What a cool place!! We didn't stay as long as I'd have liked because we had tired kids and another big day ahead of us on Tuesday, but we did get to probably half a dozen stores, DD9 bought a $60 Cinderella Castle with her Disney Dollars and we used some of our snack credits at Goofy's Candy Shop ~ I don't think anyone can walk into that shop and not feel like a little kid, LOL!! :goofy:

This was sort of a crazy day and we all had a few moments where we kind of had mini-meltdowns, but for the most part it was a lot of fun and we went to sleep with some great memories!! :wizard:

Up next: Part 3, EPCOT

Thank you ~ it really was a great day!

I forgot to mention in the report that I had a little incident at AK.

For those of you that have never been, there are these misters in front of the Dawa Bar and it was so hot that day, they were in full use so there was water everywhere in that spot and when I was going over to them with the kids, I hit a wet spot and in full view of everyone in the bar, went sliding down and landed flat on my behind (after scraping my knee, LOL)
So, ladies and gentlemen, if you saw a gal in a sleeveless pink sweater go down for the count in front of the bar that day, no I was NOT drinking, LOL! :p I just had an extremely ungraceful moment! :bitelip:

Oh, and this all happened approximately 2 minutes after I scolded the kids for not being careful in the slippery area, of course.

You certainly made us wait but it was well worth it! :goodvibes Glad you weren't hurt during the whole slip and fall incident. Truth be told, I would have cracked up seeing you do that! :lmao: Love the family pic at 'Ohana!
