i'm kinda in shock right now. i read in the newspaper that there was a 19-yr-old guy stabbed in the mall on friday night. it was around the time that i was in a building right next to the mall. i can't believe i was so close to it.

i'd sort of expect to hear about stabbings overseas, or even in sydney, but not my city. it's only a small city. so i'm a little shaken.

i don't really expect anyone to reply, i just needed to vent my shock.

My town is pretty small too. We have stabbings all the time actually lol. A lot of people here think they're gangsters xD

You have every reason to be cautious, but statistics show that victims of a violent crime almost always personally know their attacker.

It might be a good idea to carry mace on your person. Mace, not pepper spray.

There always seems to be stabbings in London and it's boroughs. I think it averages to around 2-3 teenage deaths a month. There was a stabbing down the road from me in 2008. Granted it's a long road, maybe a 10 min walk. It was along an alleyway where a bar is. I used to walk down there to get to & from school. It just seems worse when it happens close to you.

I don't really know what to say, but Shelby's right, if you feel threatened, you may want to have a personal defense of some sort.

I live near Detroit, one of the more dangerous cities in the US.

I have to admit I'm very desensitized to violence because every night on the news there's a little girl who got accidentally shot during a domestic argument or something.

I live right outside of philly, so I'm pretty desensitized too. "city of brotherly love" my BUTT.

yea... i live in the heart of chicago... i'm used 2 hearing about stabings on the south side. it is a shock though

NH has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the country (if not the lowest), but I'm still fairly desensitized to it. I've watched the evening news ever since I was little so I'm used to hearing reports of violence.

i don't really feel threatened, i'm just a bit shocked. i probably won't be walking to my car alone at night anymore though.

Thats usually a good idea anyway. The best prevention against a violent crime is to not present yourself as a possible victim. Don't walk alone at night, don't fumble for your keys while trying to unlock your car, park in a well light area, etc.

One time my mum wanted to go to our town to get something and I had like a feeling that we shouldn't go and we should just go to the supermarket instead.. so when we were in the supermarket, we heard on the news that someone had been stabbed in the town. :|

But I live near a city so it kinda happens a lot. I remember I was on a Disney Cruise a few years ago when it was on the news that a little boy had been shot by gangs fighting in my city. D:

Its better than the supposedly "Greatest City on Earth" or what I call the dirtiest. NYC is terrible. And I live near like 6 ghettos so I hear it all the time. The only time I am scared is when I see it.

Where I stay, there are some good areas and some really really bad ones.

Just fist fights mainly, but stabbings are very common, not as common as London say but still occur on a weekly basis.

A few years ago a boy I used to hang around with was stabbed by a 50 year old man, he was 13 at the time.
It's terrible.

I hear ya. The violence in my town has gotten so bad that the new nickname for it ends in Harlem. :lmao:

Amen! I <3 Philly, but it's not the city of love. I'll never forget walking out of the hospital and seeing a big black lady screaming "IMMA CALL DA POP ON YO (other word for butt)"!
