Has anyone ever take the passenger ferry from Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay, St. John? I see lots of posts about the Red Hook Ferry.

We took the ferry to St. John. I think it was about $9/pp. Children were free. I forgot what ages they were free though.
It was a nice ride and you can get the ferry near where the boat docks. Just be safe and take the 2:00 ferry back since they are not always on schedule.
It is more leisurely than going on the excursion w/the cruise since they leave about 12:00 to return. Trunks Bay does get crowded.
We are going to try Cinnamon Bay this time.

Thanks, Piglit. Do you remember the name of the ferry at Charlotte Amalie? What is the advantage of going to Red Hook? Do you rent a car or take a taxi to Cinnamon Bay?

The ferry from Charlotte Amalie does not run as frequently as the ferry from Red Hook. The ferry ride is longer. And you need to take a taxi to get to the ferry dock because it is in downtown Charlotte Amalie (the ship docks around the harbor at Havensight). Since you'd need to take a taxi whether you're going to the Charlotte Amalie ferry or the Red Hook ferry, you might as well go to Red Hook where the service is more frequent, faster, and more reliable.

We did take a ferry that was right by where the boat docked? It was right in the town where the shopping is. No need for a taxi. We did have to take a txi when we got to St. John to go to Trunks Bay and will have to again to go to Cinnamon Bay.
Dave, what do you suggest?

pigelet, I'm confused. Did you tender in from the Magic? If so, the tenders would arrive where the ferry departs from. But when the Magic docks rather than tenders in, it's a $3 taxi ride from the Charlotte Amalie ferry. And according to the ferry information page I have a link to, there's no ferry operating from Havensight.

Dave: Thanks for the ferry schedule. Our boat did not dock! We took a boat from the boat in St. Thomas and it took us about a block from where we took the ferry to St. John. Which is the best ferry to take? I have heard that you can hit "traffic" taking the Red Hook ferry!?

pigelet, thanks for responding back. The Magic docks on most visits to St Thomas. On the rare trips where they tender in, the tenders arrive directly downtown. Very different scenario. As far as traffic, traffic downtown can be a nightmare. From Havensight (where the Magic usually docks), I recommend using the Red Hook ferry.
