Has anyone rented a car at the St. Thomas cruise port recently?
We have a daughter who will be 2 at the time and don’t like the idea of open air buses and no car seat taxis.
I had read about Avis and Budget having counters there but Budget says their office is closed and the phone number for Avis doesn’t work.
I see there is a company called Rent A Motion. Has anyone ever rented from them?

Avis/Budget is the same company and they have combined offices so that is part of the problem you are encountering.

Since the STT airport is nearby, all major car rentals operate out of the airport - none at the port. You (one person) can take a cheap taxi to the airport, pick up the car, pick up your party up at the port, and reverse the process on the way back. This will add probably 30 minutes on both ends assuming there is no waiting or queues anywhere. This is assuming you are docking at Charlotte Amalie. If you are docking at the ferry terminal, there is a bit of a walk to Rent a Motion.

That said, what do you plan to do in St Thomas? We have rented a car in Tortola - but not in St Thomas since the standard visitor spots are all a quick taxi ride away.

Don't forget they drive on the "wrong" side of the road in American cars. I know for some people that isn't an issue, but we ended up staying with Taxis because of it.

We rented a car from the airport as we were staying at a resort that was relatively isolated on the other side of the island. Waited forever to get our car. They were basically waiting for a return before turning it over. Don’t expect a clean car.

Driving was a challenge especially at night. Did I mention the unclean car especially the windshield. A lot of twisting roads where the locals are always on top off you.

All in all it was worth it to us as we like to try different restaurants and did quite a bit of touring

we rented a jeep. the rental car place was at the airport. We checked in a LONG line in luggage claim where the rental car counters are. we just had to walk across the street. it is very frightening to drive there in some spots narrow roads with no gaurdrail. i always had the pipedream to live there...but after renting a car..that desire went away. we did love having a car. we stayed on sapphire beach so it was great to drive to town and such. but if you go across the island be ready for hair pin mountain turns. quick trips to town were easy. it was the adventure out trips that were the ones.
