Well, like you stated, it's in celebration of Saint Patrick. It's his feast day. So, Saint Patrick's day is a religious holiday.
Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland so it's always been big with them.
MANY Irishmen and women imigrated to the USA. That's why we have it.
Places like Boston and New York have a huge Irish population so it was celebrated by them originally. It caught on as a tradition with other ethnic groups.
