Im trying to get brave here. Ive only been to one other island and followed MIL around, had a cruise tour, etc.
Is it possible to get to the St Marten beach alone? DH wants to gamble, DS doesnt want the island tour-shopping-and may not want the beach so I may be going to the beach myself. Oh no- can it be done? Im a chicken especially in places I dont know. But darn it I cant come back here saying I didnt step foot on the island!!!

Two different beaches are very easy to get to on your own. The first one is Dawn Beach. You can take a taxi, which i think will run you $6 one way. Rent a beach chair and umbrella for $6 bucks.

The other option is to take the water taxi that runs close by the ship (you will see it when you get off) and pay the $5 (i think it was this price) and go over to the beach. This is also right by the shopping district, and it is all very easy to get to.

Check Dave's site, and he has tons of info on St. Marteen.

I especially liked the fact they went on their own and the kids could sleep in the car. We also did St Maarten on our own many years ago (pre hurricane). We rented a car and had a great time beach hopping. At the time we were four adults, so of course the guys wanted to go to the French side for the nude beaches. They were quickly cured by what they saw (the naked ones they would have preferred not to see!). We did some shopping on the French side, looking for wine we could not get in the U.S. We went to a local market and bought fruit, then shopped on the Dutch side for tapes of Carib music. I would highly recommend it! Adventure! Just do some research ahead of time. We will probably do it on our own, too. Take a look at the threads on
cruisecritic.com too for good info on the island. There might be enough time to do it all together. I also did take one tour by myself on a cruise. Went to a deserted beach on Antigua when the guys played golf and my female friend had the flu. It was nice to just be alone, sort of, but with the group from the ship, if you feel too spooked to go it alone.
