St. Augustine

I know there are several of you in this general vicinity and I'm wondering if you can help me find.....not a campground unfortunately...but a clean, inexpensive hotel near the historic district.

My DD12 and I are taking a mom/daughter/birthday road trip...to Disney World of course! We're going to try out the new Pirate rooms at Carribean Beach Resort!!! On the way down we are either going to high tail it to Orlando and stay near DtD or we may stop in St. Aug. It's been awhile since we've been there and we both love it. I've always just stayed with my Grandparents in the past so I'm really not sure where to look and Expedia seems to be confusing me more.

Any suggestions would be lovely!!!

Also, we are planning to stop in Charleston on the way back so if anyone has suggestions for there that is my next question!!!

I would be very careful in Charleston, there are some shady characters in that area.

Not sure if this would help any, but when we were house hunting, though we mostly camped at Anastasia Island, we did spend a few days prior at a Holiday Inn on A1A. It was nice, ocean front, clean, included breakfast and kids ate free for dinner, had a nice pool area, gaezebo on the dunes, and best of all, affordable. I think we paid something like 70 a night for an ocean view room over a weekend- booked over Expedia. They arent in the Historic District, but offered shuttles to and from. From my understanding of the Historic area- there are some pretty unsavory hotels in that area, but also nice ones...

We've only been here a year, so arent all that familiar. Like I said, not sure if this helps any, but thought I'd offer the tidbit anyway

Thanks! Maybe that's why Frank was doing his scared face at me! I wasn't aware of the unsavory-ness of the historic district....just knew that I enjoyed visiting there a time or two. Maybe if you want "savory" you have to pay primo for it! I'll check into some of the beach front hotels...especially the ones with shuttles. We won't have a lot of time there, but hopefully enough to walk around a bit. I saw some adorable B & B's in the historic district, goodness knows the experience would have been spectacular; but they were more than I wanted to spend on what will end up being kind of a glorified stop-over. For that price I'd just add another day at CBR!

We stayed at the Howard Johnson a few months back. Its a 1950s era hotel kinda small rooms and such but very well taken care of. It was neat thinking about how back in the day this place was the bomb. Also the tour trains come right thru the hotel complex.

I looked this place up and it's great! I don't think I've ever tried a Ho Jo's before, but it has everything we need! Historic district, clean, recently renovated, comp breakfast and cheap!

Years ago we went to St. Augustine & had a reservation for the Ho Jo. At that time they didn't have a shuttle, so we ventured into town to find a hotel in the historic district. We found what appeared to be a very cute, colonial style hotel named Monson Motor Lodge. On the marquee was the statement, "We may look expensive, but we're not." So, in we go to check out the price. It was reasonable, so we checked in. This was in 1976 - IIRC, the rate was like $12 - $18/nite. We got to the room and had a "boing" moment!! The bedspread was a billious black & cream fleur de lis pattern - ala K-Mart, and the wall paper was silver background with a red flocking. The carpet was bright orange shag. The only redeeming quality about this joint was that everything was within walking distance. It was 4th of July weekend, so our choices were limited. The lightbulb didn't go one as to why this place had a room available on such a busy weekend. We still laugh about it.

I understand this was bought by Hilton & later torn down. It was also the sight of a civil rights protest in 1964.
