On our trip in January we plan on making an overnight trip to St. Augustine. There seems to be a lot of budget things to do. Lighthouse, the Fort, Historic District....
I am looking for a hotel to stay at that would be close to these and also the beach. Actually nice to be beachfront... Any ideas on nice but not expensive place to stay? I haven't had my toes in sand for almost 2 years!

Thanks!!

My DGF just went there for a quick day trip yesterday (I had to work...) There's a Hilton facing the fort and a Best Western near the parking garage at the north end of the main part of St. George St. That's about all I saw on the map they brought back but I wasn't looking too closely for hotels.

Might check out priceline and "biddingfortravel" for tips on bidding for priceline hotels in that area.

It's a pretty cool place to explore around for a day.

If you want to be on the beach itself you'll need to search not for St. Augustine, but for either Vilano Beach or St. Augustine Beach. St. Aug Beach is actually multiple miles away from downtown historic St. Aug. Vilano Beach is closer but still across a bridge and neither is anything close to walking distance to the big attractions.

FWI, however - it will be likely cold in January and you won't want to be in the water unless you are a Polar Bear club member. By that time of year the water is cold and the temps are likely to be cool or cold as well. For us locals, anyway. If you are from Canada or something it might be fine to you, but 40 degrees to us is downright cold. :)

All of St. Aug is very walkable - anything near/in/next to the historic section of town (the fort, St. George Street, the Cathedral, Casa Monica Hotel, Lightner Museum, Flagler College - anything near those) would be close enough to walk to everything except the lighthouse and Alligator Farm, which is south of the old town across the river and would require a car
