We bought SSR while cruising on the Magic during Thanksgiving week 2004 and are "going home" for the first time and staying in a 1 bedroom at SSR June 18-22 after spending a week in the Daytona Beach area!!! DD11 and I are very excited about our first trip home! I even think DH is looking forward to it and is now realizing what a good purchase this will be for us. We had originally thought we would stay in studios a lot and we had originally booked a studio for this trip, but since purchasing DH has developed some heart problems and is on a low sodium diet so we switched our reservation to a 1 bedroom so we can cook some of our own meals so that he can keep his sodium intake in check while on vacation (very difficult to do when eating out all the time). I took a brief walk around SSR when at WDW for the marathon on Jan. and thought it was absolutely beautiful and the pictures I've seenof the accomodations look fantastic, as I said before I am very excited to be staying here in 2 weeks! Wow this is getting long, LOL, and I didn't even post my questions yet so here they are:

1. I have read there is bike rental, do they rent the surrey bikes? DD loves them!

2. Are there towels available at the pools?

3. Is there a charge to use the workout facilities?

4. According to our confirmation from DVC we will have trash and towel service the day before we check out. Now that I know we will be cooking I know I will want to "take out the trash" before then, are there dumpsters for us to do this close by and does SSR provide extra garbage bags or should I bring some from home?

5. Is it possible to walk to OKW and about how long of a walk would this be? I thought DD and I might want to walk over there one afternoon and check out their new pool or would we be better off just driving (we will have a rental car).

Those are the questions that we were thinking of for now. Sorry there are so many!

I can answer a few of your questions.
Not sure about the bike rentals at SSR.
2. all DVC pools have pool towels and towel returns.
3. No charge at OKW for the workout room, but with the spa being at SSR, I am not real sure about that one.
4. There are trash rooms at all DVC resorts. You can ask about location when you check in. The waste baskets will all have extra bags iin the bottom. Trash and towel day will be the 4th day of your stay with day one being the day you check in.
5. You can take the path to OKW from SSR, but the easier thing to do would be to take the boat that runs between SSR/OKW and DTD.

Cheryl,

I live in New Berllin (right next door) and we are going the week before you for our first trip to SSR (we stayed in many other places). Small world.

For sure no charge at SSR for the WO room and it is beautiful. It is amazing.

Since this is your first trip home some tips:
- Enjoy the comunity hall - fun place with lots of games and free DVD movies
- Drive to the other DVC properties, you can get free vallet at BW, VWL and BCV
- obviously if you've been to SSR, DTD is close and a great place
- Do some pool hoping (everywhere is allowed except BCV and AKL)

I seem to recall seeing some surrey bikes. I think you will really enjoy SSR. We enjoyed being close to DD and walked over there a couple of nights. Have a great trip!

Tigger Hi Neighbor
Thanks for the first trip home tips! We have always been pretty much done the parks commando style when we have gone to WDW but I am thinking maybe we will do this trip a bit more slowly paced and enjoy the resort more and do some pool hopping. We love DTD for shopping and dining and I am looking at it as a real plus to be so close (my wallet may regret it though because DD LOVES to shop and we might now be to close to the World of Disney store LOL).

Just confirming they do have surrey bike rentals.

I also agree that walking to OKW would not be wise. I'm not sure exactly how far the walk might be, but once you arrive at the resort you will be in one of the furthest points from the main pool.

The boat is a good suggestion, but check the schedule ahead of time since it only runs on the hour. If your room is close to Downtown Disney, you could consider walking to DTD and then catch the OKW bus. That will drop you off right at OKW's Hospitality House.

Sorry to hear about DH's health issue, but that switch to a one bedroom will be the second-best DVC decision you've ever made! I kinda think you'll like it even more than a studio! :cool1:

Not sure about the surrey bikes but I do remember from our trip Feb 2005 that the bike rental shop closed at 5p.m. What a bummer that was. Not sure if that was just a seasonal hour but something to keep in mind for your trip.

Yes they do have the surrey bikes! I think I remember the 2 and the 4 seaters. They also have regular bikes, kids bikes, and kids bikes w/training wheels. They also have free DVD rentals! This is at all DVC resorts - just found that out last trip!

Have fun!

Hi Cheryl!!

Remember us!! We were also on the cruise. We are also going to be staying at SSR while you are there. Sorry to hear about Al, hope things are going well. How did the marathon go?

I also have given thought to switching to a one bedroom but it's 170 more points for the duration of our stay and we're not in our room much. We're planning on getting APs as well as spending a lot of time by the pool.

Jennz,

I noticed you were from Noblesville? Nice place and growing too quick. My brother lives there, I spent the weekend of the 500 with him. He owns a company that supplies the gearboxes for the series.

Cheryl N - was at SSR today and checked on the bikes, they do have the 2 an 4 seater surreys. :)

Doogierunner - yes indeed we live in Noblesville now! We've been there almost 2 years and it IS growing like crazy!! I've gotten a couple of messages from DISers from Noblesville - maybe we'll have to have a meet!

Thanks everyone for all the info on the surrey bikes, DD was really excited to hear they have them! Free DVD renatls sound great too, in case we have a rainy day or need some down time we'll keep that in mind!

Jim DHs heart issues were a good wake up call as he is definitely eating much more healthy now. I am sure you are right about us liking the one bedroom better than a studio, it will be nice to have all the room along with the kitchen and of course the washer and dryer.

Doogie Of course we remember you and your family from the cruise. Wow, what a small world that you will be at SSR when we are, maybe we could meet at the pool sometime. Al is doing good now but he sure gave me a scare in March when his blood pressure suddenly sky rocketed for no apparent reason, but at least things are under control now. I think a 2 week vacation to FL will be good for all of us!
The marathon was a blast and I am a very proud owner of a Donald Duck medal! We did a mix of walking and jogging and we had great weather. We finished in 3:16 which I was happy with considering my 2 friends that I walked with didn't really do any training at all. I even contemplated walking the full marathon next year but decided against it for now, but some day I do want to try for that Mickey medal!
Are you guys cruising again this year at Thanksgiving? We just couldn't swing it as much as I would have liked to but we are cruising again in Oct. 2006.
