Do you tip for maintenance?

I reported a problem with my room shortly after I checked in -- the bathroom fan would not go off, and it was loud, so it wasn't going to be very conducive to sleeping. The first maintenance person was unable to fix it, so he simply disabled it for the night and scheduled for someone to come the next day. When I came back to my room in the afternoon, all the lights were on, the fan was on, what I had hanging in the shower stall (wet towel, hanging on the clothesline) was taken down (not laying in a "fell off" position), there was stuff in the toilet that was not mine (putting it nicely), and the mousekeeping tip on the tray in front of the coffeemaker was gone. The bathroom fan was now quieter and not constantly running, so I know that it was maintenance that was in the room. And the trash cans were not emptied, so I know mousekeeping was not there.

Do you leave a tip for maintenance? Would the maintenance guy have legitimately thought that was his tip? My thought is that the maintenance employees probably make a lot more than mousekeepers do and they are not someone to be tipped. Mousekeeping actually provides a service for us as individuals and they depend on tips.

I reported everything to management and they sent the head of housekeeping to talk to me. I emphasized to him that it was not housekeeping's issue, that I hadn't even had room service yet, having checked in the day before (moderate resort). He talked to maintenance, the employee was already gone for the day, so I will probably not know the outcome of that. I was credited the missing money on my account.

This morning a part of me is feeling guilty for reporting it. I wouldn't want to cost someone their job, but then again, perhaps some more training is needed for this person.

I'm a serial over tipper and gotta say, it's never crossed my mind to tip for maintenance.

There have been threads before about someone taking cash, presumably thinking it was a tip for them, when it wasn't.

If I leave a tip in my room, I leave a note with it. The note usually says, "Maid" or "Housekeeping." I guess not everybody does that.

Stop then. You don’t tip maintenance. And under absolutely no circumstances does anyone from Disney leave anything in your toilet-whether you tipped them or not!

Do check your other belongings and assure nothing is gone.

(And just so you really don’t feel bad, his ploy is smart to steal housekeeping’s tips. If Housekeeping did come through they’d just assume you don’t tip, you would assume they got their tip. No one would be the wiser.)

That's when I would have requested another room- given an upgrade if required.

I don't want more "strangers" coming into the room than necessary.

Leaving the room in that condition is totally unacceptable, housekeeping could have not responded if maintenance told them about it after they left.

The issue was fixed as much as possible that night. Disney runs at crazy high capacity including 💯 capacity often. OP could have packed up their crew up that night and marched them down to the front desk to demand a new room and had good odds of being told “sorry we don’t have one, do you want your old one or will you be checking out early?”

Now the next morning they could have had a discussion with the front desk about being in the room when maintenance came to fix or asking maintenance complete the fix after the stay was over. But demanding a new room or an upgraded* new room when yours is habitable is the sort of thing TikTok videos are made of.

*Fun fact- I’ve had unfixable maintenance issues at Disney 3 times. 1 upgrade, 2 downgrades…
