SSR vs. DVC Resale

Hi! :earsboy: I am getting interested in purchasing a DVC property. My DH and I honeymooned at PO-FQ 5 years ago and we've been back to Disney World 3 times since then. So, I think it's probably a worthwhile investment, especially now that we have a Mouseketeer.

At the current SSR rate, this sort of purchase would be hard to manage right now, so I was thinking of buying a DVC resale in order to buy less points (to keep it under $10K) with the idea that we would buy more points later. I really like the Wilderness Lodge.

The only drawback I see is that the points expire sooner.

Are there any other drawbacks to consider? I have to admit that I've been investigating this on and off for a few years and it's still very confusing.

Thanks! :)

It's more a matter of what you like and what you intend to do with it, in my opinion. If you really like Wilderness Lodge, then buy there. I don't know how far in advance you book your trips, but remember that you can only book 11 months out at the resort you own, otherwise you have to wait until 7 months out.

Also, you can add on at any other resort through resales, too, when you're ready.

Best wishes!!

If you over-extend yourself, you may resent your purchase. The cardinal rule here seems to be "buy where you want to stay". If you like Wilderness Lodge, then research VWL. You get to make reservations there at 11 months if that where you own the points.

If you aren't sure, go to the official website and check out the pictures. We actually called to buy SSR, but were offered 200 points at Boardwalk, and we bought them sight unseen. I think we knew we would keep going to Disney and the ability to stay in a villa was what we wanted. We have stayed at BWV twice, OKW once VB once, and HH once. All are very nice, but we like the Boardwalk the best.

I'm one that, as a whole, disagrees with the theory of buy where you want to stay. I think buy-where-you-want-to-stay only applies if you can always book more than 7-months out and if you travel during peak times and only want to stay at a certain resort in certain accommodations. If you book at 7-months or less, then where you own doesn't really matter when it comes to making reservations.

Now, if you know you want to stay at VWL every year at Christmas and it would ruin Christmas if you couldn't stay there, then I would recommend buying at VWL. Same for BCV and BWV for Food&Wine, etc...

I certainly wouldn't recommend over-stretching your budget, but the SSR deal is pretty good, especially with the 12 extra years. You would get 150 pts for $12495.00, so not too much more than the $10,000. You may or may not get a better "price" for a resale, but since you are looking at less than 150 points, you stand a bigger chance of not passing ROFR even if you do find a good price per point. DVC seems to be buying up these smaller contracts. Again, don't stretch your limits and resent the purchase... because you also have to factor in the MN fees.

Think about your travel habits, the possibility of those changing, look at the numbers, look at your budget, and think about some of the other "what-ifs".

HTH...
Chris
