When daily internet is purchased is it from noon to noon or midnight to midnight? or another time frame?

The cost is $9.95 per 24 hour period. The time starts when you first log onto the system- so if you sign-in at 8:00pm your 24 hours runs until 8:00pm the next day before you'd have to purchase another session. You could then wait until 10:30am to log on again and would have until 10:30am the following day. The charges will appear on you resort statement.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it should be free. I can stay in a Hampton Inn for less than 100 bucks and get free hi-speed internet. I think Disney and DVC need to get with the times. Some resorts, such as Vero Beach, don't even offer hi-speed.

In my travels, I've seen some movement in the last couple of years away from wireless, but more hotels offering free hardwire broadband.

Wireless nics and hotel buildings often don't work well, and the coverage can be really spotty. I can't imagine trying to set up wireless in a place like OKW or SSR when it's finished! Plus you have added security concerns with wireless.

I read this, but the truth is that "most all hotel chains" don't offer free internet. It's actually much more likely at the discount hotels. Marriott charges around $10.95 per day at the Resorts and Marriott hotels. The Hilton I was in the other day was $12.95 a day. Westin runs about $10....

Plus Disney isn't even doing thier own internet here. They have someone else doing it.

No matter what it's not FREE, your dues would just go up to support folks like me who use it. There is a cost to this. you have to maintain it, you have to staff the support etc...

Wireless may be convenient but I have yet to get speed equivalent to a wired connection.

I find it odd that the likelihood of free high speed internet is inversely related to the cost of the room. At least this is my experience among the Marriott brands. There are exceptions -- one Ritz and one Marriott come to mind.

High speed internet is like cable TV -- considered a basic service by the business folks. I could see it remaining an option at vacation resorts.

CarolA, I'm with you. Disney is outsourcing all of its IT department, meaning that for them internet access is not free for them. Not everyone uses internet when they are on vacation, so why should everyone pay for internet access when just a few make use of it?
I rather pay my usage when I'm there than seen my annual dues go up because of this.

There is a cost to DVC for the internet usage. Mayby we should get it at their cost not the $9.95 the the hotel guest pay. This way our dues shouldn't go up and those who use it pay for it.

I'd suggest an affordable way to do this would be to offer wireless in a lounge / coffee type area of each resort. I agree that hard-wiring every room would be too expensive. And as someone said, ensureing wireless access to every room may be too problematic, and would result in daily calls to the front desk from folks who can't connect from their rooms.

Setting up a hot point wireless area in a common area should be affordable and much less problematic. Plus, if they put decent coffee nearby, it would increase their coffee sales.

If discount hotels can afford to give you free Wi-Fi, I think DVC could absorb the cost without maintenance hikes. Stop people from using last years refillable mug and you've paid for it.

Actually, I don't mind paying for the Internet when I use it. But charging the resort owners, DVC members, $10 per 24 hour period? Someone is getting rich here. Maybe these profits should be returned to us as lowered maintenance fees.

Thank you for the first response of the timeline of charges.

We also own with Fairfield and when they built Bonnet Creek they brought in free broadband. The rooms aren't wired but the port is out of the phone. This allowed for a lower installation cost. The service is free. It is very nice because when we stay there we can look up park times, menus, send daily pics home to grandparents and sometimes before bed the girls can IM with grandparents. This next trip we are taking our niece who has never been before and we will send pics to her mom each day before bed. It's her first trip off this far from home without parents.

But, FF did find a way to put a wired connection in each unit without having to build it into the building. Altering the phones in each DVC unit might be a solution. I forget which system was used but it was very convenient.

And, it wouldn't be free for Disney either if they were carrying full staff with benefits, etc. to offer this service.

It would be interesting to see if more people would use the high speed access if offered at a reduced rate...could hit a tipping point and become a little profit center...therefore reducing operating costs a smidge.

I agree... I know I will use it and I should pay for it. If you don't use it why should you pay for it? And that's what "Free" does. Disney is a publicly held corporation with stockholders so "free" just means ... "we made up the profit someplace else"

Even before Disney entered into an agreement to outsource much of its IT needs to IBM, they had already subcontracted the Internet service to an outside vendor. I, too, held out hope that DVC members might get free service, but it hasn't happened. And, since the service has been running for over a year with no freebies, my guess is that there are either no provisions in the contract which would allow it to happen or the provisions are such that Disney has no interest in exercising them.

Since this third-party vendor has the expecatation of covering installation, maintenance and opearting costs, plus an acceptable profit margin, their compensation would have to come from somewhere. As is the case with housekeeping, let those who want additional services pay for additional services. I, for one, can live with a week's worth of dial-up speed if necessary.

DVC already gets us great room prices, Annual Pass discounts, dining discounts, recreation discounts, free members-only parties, access to special members-only events and cruises, etc. I think DVC is doing a pretty darn good job of protecting its members.

The in-room internet pay-per-access market is likely to take a big hit very soon as the wireless telecom companies roll out their high-speed data sevices with rates in the 300k-2000k range.

Pretty soon you'll be able to plug your computer into the phone or connect to it via Bluetooth and off you'll go.

So you never know, free or nearly-free access might be a future perk we have to look forward to.

The Westin will give it to you free if you sign up for their membership program.

I've noticed the same thing. It seems as if the discount chains offer the free internet access to get the people to stay there. While the high end chains charge you because "if you can already afford to stay here, you can afford another 10 bucks."
