cinema at SSR - do you think that it will ever show disney movies free to DVC?

I know about the campfire program at FW that has the free movies - but I sure wish DVC would do something similar.

what do you think?

I think I read on a different thread that the cinema might become a sit-down restaurant. I'd rather see as a theater.

I can't see it becoming a restaurant. First it's not that big inside. 2nd, the floor slopes (theater style) and would require extensive work to level it out. 3rd, there's not a lot of room left for a kitchen area.

Now that other empty building, can't remember the name of it right now, but it's the one directly across from the entrance to the check-in building. That building might be a better choice for a restaurant, especially since it's more central to the SSR facilities. Last I heard they didn't know for sure what to do with that building. Anybody heard anything new?

They had a wonderful sit down restaurant (Seasons, I believe) when it was DI. They put the food court there now.

It would be wonderful if they put the Cinema to a use benefiting members.

I was wondering what that other building was, near check in. It is huge.

Used to be a great theater near us where they served dinner to you while you watched a movie. Waiters would walk through to bring you what you wanted. Really wasn't that intrusive on the movie. Great fun. They ran second run movies. Perhaps that's an option. Be great for when it rains.

A CM at SSR says it's rumoured that the cinema will either stay as just that or that they might make it into a bowling alley. (it doesn't look big enough to me for that!)

And who would pay the cost of the projectionist, the janitorial service, security, rental of films, etc.?

It doesn't sound "free" anymore.

The Cinema is currently used to benefit members by offering the Member Updates each week. There are no longer updates at OKW and BWV- they are now at SSR- in the Cinema.

The building across from the check in area (and next to the pool area) is the Performance Center. It is a large auditorium (James Earl Jones offered a poetry reading there for a program when DI was still open).

Stay Tuned!

But I was talking to my DVC sales person about an add-on, and they said that Disney has some kind of contractual obligation to AMC theater in Downtown Disney......

so they don't want us going to SS for a movie, they want us to go to DD.

I said I might be willing to do this, but to walk to the boat to get to DD was really far from some buildings, and the guide said they know. So I don't see any movies in the foreseeable future. Waaahhh!!!

I also mentioned that the SS pool could use some shade, that it's really hot to walk on, and the guide wrote that comment down too.

Oh, and guide said that it's someone's job to read these boards to see what we're saying ;)

okay I would agree that movie might not be free - but hey if they can and do should free movies nightly at the campfire at FW - how about DVC members??????

I would think because the movies are outside - they would have more trouble during that than showing movies inside.....

I am not talking about the new movies - those are definitely for the DD AMC theater - the old classical - like the ones that FW shows....

family movies only!!! G rating!!!

I can understand no showing 'first run' movies like at DTD, but the movies like they show at FW shouldn't be a problem. That would be a 'fun' alternative for something to do in the evenings. I like this idea too!

I want that job!

jimh13432... I think getting paid to read these boards would be a great job too, but I would have a hard time not responding to some of the posts. Hmmmm... maybe someone that posts here is a spy, maybe we know them well.....

The guide implied that even if free movies were offered, that it would discourage us from hoofing over to DD to see the AMC films....

and beyond that, it was a contractual agreement that they might just not want to split hairs about.

My reply was well, certainly the agreement had a timeframe, like 10 or 20 years, so maybe they could do something then.

I know I would love old reruns of the movies. I love the FW campfire movies... but it's too hard to drag a sleepy little one home afterwards, because we're staying at DVCs.

Wonder if the annual meetings will also be held at the Cinema now (instead of at the Convention Center at the BW).

Anyone know or care to speculate?
