SSR and it's effect on OKW?

I can think of several reasons.

1. Don't know about the resale market and the salesguide told them the other DVC resorts are already sold out.

2. Want Disney financing. (I think this is a big one).

3. Want something right now and/or want a specific use year and specific number of points. Resale takes time and effort. It can be intimidating to those unfamilar with it - kind of like buying a used car.

4. Seldom book more than 7 months in advance so home resort doesn't matter. Sales guide told them most people don't book more than 6 months in advance and that they'd almost cetainly be able to stay at OKW whenever they want.

I'm sure there are others.

Best wishes -

A big one for many people buying in now is that the "ending year" has adjusted for SSR to be an additional 12 years of ownership. I find that to be rather enticing as well as the points Carol brought up.

getting any DVC resort for Dec has always been hard.

Dec is a very popular time for DVC owners to go to WDW. It is lovely!!!

I haven't heard about Jan being crowded. I mean that is definitely an off month.

If WDW is that crowded you would think they would be closing the parks again - like they did in the middle 90's - to anyone who wasn't staying on property - and finally to everyone.

the summer - I was just there - just don't seem as busy. I admit to changing my touring go in the morning then leave when it gets to hot or crowded and go back that evening. but we have an very enjoyable stay.

When we bought DVC I didnt know about the DIS and I didnt do my homework.
We love OKW. We had stayed there on cash before we knew what DVC was. We toured SSR and were not thrilled with the resort but our guide said we would never have a problem getting a ressie at OKW at the seven month window and we would have extra years. At that time I was lucky if I knew six months in advance when I would be able to take a vacation so it didnt matter where our home resort was. Things change. Now I'm a stay at home Mom and I have our vacations planned up thru 2007.
Our first add on will be OKW thru resale. :cheer2:

Forgot about this one. Yes, this is probably a big selling point for a lot of people. :)

Because SSR is close (proximately) to OKW and has a similar point structure, I don't think it will be a big problem.

It was for me. I am not even sure I would want to do "add-ons" anywhere other than SSR for that reason. For now (and later in life) we are off season travelers, so it doesn't really matter. I am one of those people that WILL take her children out of school as long as they can handle it to take a family vacation, so we might forever be "off peak" travelers where if we wanted to stay somewhere other than SSR, we would get our ressie.

I love OKW as well as the feel of SSR. We are less hotel people (when with the children) and more of "home rental" people from past vacations and those two resorts seem to fit our tastes and needs best for now. When hubby and I travel alone (bwhaha - when...lord knows WHEN it will be again since baby#3 will be here soon), I see us wanting to stay in a hotel type setting. I also figure we might want to try VWL at some point when all our children are old enough to really enjoy the activities there. If we can't ever get in elsewhere and we decide we really WANT to, then I will consider add-ons, but for now, keeping my points at SSR works best for me! Its a beautiful resort with plenty for us!

I think I'm confused as to why someone wouldn't buy a resale at OKW if they wanted to stay at OKW I don't just mean your friends - I mean anyone in general.

Cast member discount available only when purchasing thru Disney, gives them 25% off. Pretty substantial reason for those eligible.

I stayed at OKW May 7 to 13 and it didn't seem busy. I had no problem getting a space in the main lot 3 or 4 times, which I was surprised at considering the new pool slide. This was our 5th year at OKW around this time and this year seemed less crowded. There were times in the past that I had to park at building 14 to check-in because of no spaces in the main lot.

We're among those who just bought OKW through resale (selling at another "home") for that 11 month advantage. I know OKW hasn't been hard to get at 7 months, but regardless of what the guide said about "never" having trouble getting OKW at 7 months, never say "never"! For DH, it's OKW or no Disney (you know the type-"OKW is the only 'true' DVC resort", etc.)! And when we did all this, we got more points in the process, so I'm not complaining. But yes, he wanted to be sure he could get that 11 month advantage at OKW.

OKW is my favorite and I wish I owned some points there. I am hoping that as it does get harder to book at 7 months, my Beach Club points will be valuable enough that I could trade with someone who has OKW and wants BCV. As I am DVC-obsessed anyway, I always book RIGHT when the 7-month window opens.

If that is what you really want, why not sell your BCV (you could do it yourself and save the 10%) and buy OKW. I think you would actually come out with either more points, or money in your pocket.

We just sold our OKW to buy more BCV. :rotfl:

Beca, I love OKW but I suspect my family will stay at BCV more as my children get older. They are 7 and 11 now and I am guessing that the BCV points will seem more "valuable" when I have teens. So far there has been no trouble getting into OKW as I called daily right at 7 months (neurotic DVC planner).

Hope you are enjoying your BCV points! We are staying there in a little under 3 weeks and the kids are very excited about the "sand pool." :)

Got it!! And...I agree that SAB may become more important as your kids get older.

SSR is not to my taste. But i only bought one mug and one T-shirt on my last trip.

I live in a tourist destination. When they interviewed visitors about their plans it sounded like this:beach, hiking, museums, eating out, historic points, entertainment.
When they interviwed the departing visitors it
sounded like this:beach, eating out, shopping, entertainment, more shopping.
So maybe many people will be very happy with the proximity to Downtown Disney.

Keep in mind that being able to book at a non-home resort at all is not a DVC guarantee as the program can be eliminated at any time, and then a member could only book at their home resort.

They can also change the windows, thus instead of 11-7 it might become 11-3, or some other set of numbers. Haven't looked at the POS lately on this, but I know the ability to make changes is written into the POS.

I think if it got out of hand where members couldn't get their home resort at 7-months at all anymore, that DVC would then have to change the rules.

This isn't just about OKW owners but any resort.

We bought a small 50 point OKW contract to begin and I had sort of had planned to pick up two more 50 point contracts varying the resorts to spread the home resort booking. Then I started looking at the Grand Villa point requirements and it seems like the points for a Grand Villa at OKW are almost half what is needed for one at the other resorts. So with long term planning, I think we are going to be better off keeping everything at OKW to have a better Grand Villa advantage in years to come.

When we did a last minute ressie this past June, we couldn't get in anywhere except SSR and then when we got there we had our choice of rooms.

We had to waitlist for a night at OKW in a studio at about two months out for May. It did come through in about a week. But I've never had that happen with OKW. They had the availability at Saratoga, but no where else but Saratoga. No other resort studios were available but Saratoga. So I would say it's already making a difference. Wonder what it will be like when Saratoga is completely finished? I figure it will be like OKW used to be. The largest usually has availability when none of the others do.

Also Keep in mind that SSR is bringing new rooms online on a staggered schedule, so their availability will reflect that.

While all other DVCs are booked SSR isnt booking rooms until the bldgs are close to being finished. This is why when you call MS right now, they tell you that SSR is the only thing they have available because they are not prefilling these rooms.

Since SSR is scheduled to open 1 bldg a month, availability will be great at SSR in the near future.

I don't know if it is because of SSR or not, but this past year, we have encountered a lot of folks staying at OKW who are not owners. I like to strike up conversations everywhere I go, and it seems this past year there were fewer OKW owners than usual at OKW, and quite a few other DVC owners and renters.

Interesting, just got back from SSR and we didn't meet one person who owned there, most were from BWV, a few OKW and BCV owners and alot staying on cash or comp stays (potential buyers)?
