I opened my July hello from Disney that they send to my email account and saw the offer of $179/nt. for SSR or $69/nt. for the value resorts.

Wow! This is great for non-DVC owners, but that price will surely wreak havoc on our DVC break-even calculations.

You still do better with DVC.

A week in choice season at SSR is 97 points, so $400+ in maintenance fees is still much better than the $1,400 with this deal for 7 nights.

My thought is that we all assumed that hotel prices would continue to increase and that this is a short term situation, and DVC is still a better deal, even with Disney cutting prices.

What are your thought?

I'm a new member, so I have no history to base this on, but my guess is it's a short term reaction to the economy and will be temporary. I think over the life of our contracts we'll still come out ahead--hotel prices will go up eventually, even if they don't this year (and of course they may still go up this year).;)

I'm assuming that price is for a studio? I think PP is right, probably due to the economy. Plus, they are still selling at that resort so maybe they figure they will lure people in with a lower per night price and then potentially make a DVC sale from it too.

I also believe that $179/nt price is only for Sun thru Thurs - Fri & Sat nights are more. If I read it correctly :confused3

I was talking to someone in our office yesterday who is in sales of rentals for some of our timeshare resorts. She was saying that it bad and really hard for the timeshares to compete at the prices the HOA's expect. Hotels are doing some deep discounting right now. Heck, my sister if off to Vegas for 2 free nights in their usual hotel, a free entry in a video poker tournament and a 50.00 gas card. Just to get them to come to the hotel. How do the HOA's compete with that?

My friend booked at SSR for that price on a Friday and Saturday night.

Of course, once you throw in all the taxes, it's probably pushing $200 a night!!! And that's for a studio, right?

Good deal if weekends are covered during Dream, Magic, or Premier seasons. What were the eligible dates?

5 nights on points, 2 for cash.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Which, like last year, CRO will promptly overbook and then ship the surplus over to stay in all the vacant SSR one-bedrooms.

I was there for the full onslaught of the value guests upon SSR. It wasn't a pretty sight. Too many people per room over there and then they dumped them into SSR. A million people at the counter service places. They loved it in a deluxe resort for less than $100 a night. I would too. If I thought I was going to All Stars and was placed in a SSR one bdrm I would have thought I died and went to heaven.

It says $179 per night, plus tax, in a studio at SSR or OKW for stays most Friday & Saturday nights 8/3-8/23 and 9/1-27. The fine print:

"MPORTANT DETAILS: *The number of rooms available at these rates is limited. Minimum length-of-stay requirements may apply for Friday or Saturday arrivals."

This makes no sense to me--what about the other five nights of the week? :confused3

I didnt realize that flow overs from Values ended up at a place like SSR!! OUCH for us and Wooohooo for them!

Remember that many DVC members avoid staying on points for the more expensive Friday and Saturday nights. Then it makes sense that Disney/DVC is pushing the weekend nights - there is lots of availability, especially for August (which isn't as popular a time to visit as many other times of the year).

For the heck of it, I put in August 17 to 24 at SSR & OKW, it came out at $179 for each night (Sunday to Saturday nights, studio). 1 bedroom $274 per night, all nights. Since SSR is close to sellout, I would assume this means DVC turned over alot of breakage rooms at 60 days.

Also found:

VWL Studio: $209 per night
BCV - not available
BWV - not available
AKL - ? not on dropdown

I am sure there is a method to the madness... DVC management will most likely offer these reduced rate rooms in an effort to have people stay at a DVC resort in the hopes they will like the facility, and be encouuraged to buy into the DVC experience. These rates will most likely be cut back to a very small number of rooms, and only when attendence is low, after SSR is sold out.

Just my take on this, because frankly this is what I would do if it were up to me...

I understand that (since I'm one of those members), but in the fine print it says that there may be a minimum LOS requirement for Friday & Saturday arrival while at the same time implying that only Friday & Saturday nights are available at that rate. :confused3

It doesn't make any difference to me since I'll be at AKV and VWL, but I just thought the wording was a little weird.

there have been discounts at ssr for cash res. since they made it - nothing new.

OKW is offered at that price as well. VWL and AKL were 199.00 a month - not during hurricane season - when we bought in a few years ago. Bouncebackers can get GF, BWI, YC and POLY for that price during high DVC demand times like early December & Food and Wine. All the resorts are discounted August and September - with free dining and other promotions offered at this time, I think DVC is a bad choice for anyone who willingly travels in September every year.

DVC has never been for bargain-hunters. Most of use want the flexibility to travel when we want. I know we are tied to summer travel - when Disney never offers any good discounts at all - not even with an AP.

Similar prices are almost always available to one group or another. As a Florida resident and an AP holder, I have never been unable to get a comparable discount. I don't even try for the General Public discounts, but those pop up too. Renting points is even a better deal.
I'm not poo-pooing DVC. I have wanted to buy in for several years, but it would be an emotional buy and not one that makes financial sense in my situation. It just doesn't add up for me when I can get the discounts. That doesn't stop me from wanting, however.
