SS Edmund Fitzgerald - 50 Years

A tragedy of epic proportions. I was too young and not a big news person back then ( 14yrs old) so I never knew the the song written and sung by Mr. Gordon Lightfoot was based on a true story. There have been many articles lately of the 50 year anniversary. I live in WI near the shores of Lake Michigan. Shipwrecks are a big part of the Great Lakes history. I just read that the original bell was recovered from the wreck years ago and also replaced! The bell rings every year 29 times for the souls lost and once for all lives taken by the water. An exception was made the year Mr. Lightfoot died and there was an extra ring for him.

This event (and song) always takes me to the crying zone. Such an everyday move from one side of a lake to another brought so much tragedy. The Great Lakes are filled with similar wrecks and stories but perhaps it’s the modernity that touches me.
Rest in peace until and after they find you.

Yes, I live in this area and love Lake Superior. We toured the history center and they said there were over 300 sunken boats in the lake. It's more like an inland ocean to me. It's so big and cold with lots of shipping traffic too. Just a gorgeous lake to visit.

The podcast There's More About That... is doing a 2-parter on this. Part 1 is out today.
