Squirrels, Ducks and Coconut Butts!!! A Wish Trip Report *LATEST UPDATE 05/2011**

As much as I like CA, it dosen't hold a candle to Disneyland. I consider DL my "home" park. I would make my day a Disneyland day!!!!:thumbsup2

Sadly, I have no idea about what California Adventures has to offer. I have been to Disneyland many, many years ago, but that was long before CA came into being. Good luck deciding! What other amusement parks are you planning on doing?

Phoebe's passport gives our family admission into just about every park in the country. :woohoo:The ones that we are hoping to fit in during our CA trip in Sept are SD Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Legoland, Six Flags Magic Mtn., and possibly a water park near my parents if it's warm. The passport does not give entry into any of the parks we did on the wish trip itself (Disney, US, or Sea World). We will be using our GAD/GAD vouchers at Disney. If the price to upgrade to a 2day parkhopper was discounted by the voucher I might do that, but it's almost double the single day admission, so no real benefit to doing it on this trip. :confused3

I don't know much about DL or CA but I have read a couple of trip reports. At one of the hotels they have Goofy's Kitchen which is like Chef Mickey's and they also have a character breakfast at the Plaza Inn which is in DL.

It's funny, but I never even knew character meals existed until I found the DIS. I did think about that for her bday. If there was one IN the park I would probably do it. Still thinking about it though.

As much as I like CA, it dosen't hold a candle to Disneyland. I consider DL my "home" park. I would make my day a Disneyland day!!!!:thumbsup2

I'm definitely leaning that way. I guess CA would be better if we had a several day park hopper pass so we could go back and forth and not feel like we wasted anything if we liked DL better.

OK , totally misunderstood that!! Sorry!! Yet another moron moment.

Never been to DCA- it was opened after I moved out of SoCal.

No worries. :) I don't know what year CA Adv. was built/opened but me and DH have never been. We went to DL all the time as kids (up until about the 90s) and then one NYE we went just for the party and Phoebe was a baby. This past year has been a Disney renaissance for us. lol

I was sooo behind on reading your TR but I'm so glad that I was able to come and catch up today!

I love reading your adventures because they make me laugh and smile! I have two Tessas so I know how it is! :rotfl: My son Chase is very excitable and our restaurant meals are exactly like yours. Between Selah talking extremely loud and Chase trying to out talk her, it can get pretty lively. And for some reason one of them always ends up under the table on the floor :lmao: gotta love them though!

Your car ride will be a priceless memory for years to come!! When we went on Chase's wish trip he blessed us with a very stinky blowout. It was down his legs and up his back  It took a lot of scrubbing to get the smell out of the van!!

Sounds like you all have had a very interesting trip. and now we are into cliff hangers......did Tessa sleep all night?....or did she make another successful room breakout???? popcorn::

Hello checking in for an update and to see how you are all doing!;) I was hoping there was a little more things that is close to us on Ty's passport but we are going to try to do a few of the things on there. If we make it out West next year we will be able to do some things too but that is a big if right now. I love how your family travels alot!

Makes you wonder about all these rental cars, doesn't it?!?:scared1:

TWO Tessas?!?! That's why we stopped adopting after we got her. :rotfl2:

I know, I know. I want to finish, I really do! Phoebe starts school next week, so whatever I can't get done this week will definitely pick up speed then...

Well, our parents are all in CA so being a one day drive we tend to do that one at least once a year. Depends on how many times we can convince them to come here! I get restless and just need to get out of the house. I think the MAW trip reminded Tim how fun it is to explore the world, and we are talking about future trips. My frugal self just wants all the credit cards back to zero first!

We woke up around 8 and did a head count. Tessa was still in the room, although she HAD messed with the brakes on the wheelchair, possibly trying to escape? I found another shot of our fabulous room.

Phoebe had leaked a bit overnight so I asked the hotel to please change the sofa bed sheets, but not to worry about anything else. They ended up replacing all the linens, but at least they left the furniture in our temporary arrangement. I made sure to book all hotels that served some sort of breakfast on site, because I knew with our group it just wasn't going to be possible for all of us to be ready at the same time to head out to a restaurant. The Windham had a nice, large breakfast room with enough choices to satisfy everyone.

By the time we were done eating, Phoebe was ready for a nap already. Since we were heading just a few minutes into historic Charleston I knew she wouldn't have any other opportunity to nap. I put her to bed while Tim put the car seat back together and rearranged the car. Heather liked looking over the tourist brochures and magazines trying to decide what places would be the most fun to see. Phoebe slept for an hour and we finally got into old C-ton around noon.

When we first exited the freeway the neighborhood looked pretty run down, and we were a little nervous to not know our way around. I had a guide book that highlighted some of the oldest buildings and places that had historical interest. We drove a few blocks and started feeling a little more at ease as the homes looked a little less dilapidated and showed some pride of ownership. There were some of these three story buildings that amazed us because they defied gravity by leaning so far over that some of them required 2x4s to be propped against the leaning sides. We drove down one block and saw some really beautiful and interesting homes, and then a couple of churches. The guide book told us about how important the "Aiken Rhett" mansion was, but most of these noted homes were being hailed as fine examples of such-and-such architecture, decor, furnishings, etc. We were NOT going to pay money to tour these places with our hyper 4 yr old and our 8 yr old in her wheelchair! Helllooooo?!!?!

At the corner of Charlotte and Elizabeth streets Heather and I said we just had to get out and walk the block. Tim drove around with the kids while I tried to quickly capture some of the interesting sights. Church was letting out at the red brick, New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist church on one corner. When I went to look up the name of it I found out that in 2007 the city refused a request by the pastor to turn the church into a theatre. The congregation of 300 couldn't afford the upkeep of the 1859 church, built to hold 1200. The neighbors in the area said they would rather have condos or a single family residence in it's place. I couldn't find a more recent article for an update, but I did see it listed on Ticketmaster as a venue. Since they were holding church services the day we were there I will consider it a victory for the church! One corner had a building that used to be Smith's Groceries, according to the faded sign on it's wall.

Directly across the street from the Baptist church was a huge white Presbyterian church. The Second Presbyterian Church was dedicated in 1811 and some of the headstones in the cemetery were equally old. This one is for a 15 yr old girl named Sarah who died in 1815. I can't read the one next to her but obviously a child's with initials S.H.P. I couldn't decide if the 'modernization' of the building over the top of these graves was commendable or reprehensible.

Looking from the front steps across the street to yet another old church. The Mother Emanuel AME church, founded in 1818.

At the end of the block Tim picked us up and we continued toward the historic downtown. We paid to park in a lot at the corner of Market and Meeting Streets. We were all hungry at this point, so we asked the parking attendant for a recommendation. He suggested Hyman's Seafood just down the street and gave us a coupon.
Waiting for a table outside Hyman's Seafood on the weird rocking bench. In case you can't read it, Heather's shirt is Oscar the GROUCH.

Funky interior, but restored to it's previous glory.

Lots of famous people ate here. We debated which ones we wanted to be associated with depending on our seat at the table. Some of the ones from our table were:

You can also see some of the hushpuppies and boiled peanuts in the background. It was the usual fight with Tessa to get her to eat and not crawl around, under and over the table.

Our waiter talked to Heather for a loooooooong time. He said he was married, but I couldn't quite tell if he was flirting. Heather is a manager in the restaurant industry so they did talk shop most of the time. After dinner they gave us some coupons to go next door to the General Store and pick out a free popcorn or ice cream. Tim also decided to get a souvenir hat, very cheap.

We walked back to the car to swap out a few items, I walked back toward the restaurant when Tessa said she needed to potty. Back to the car again, we were ready to do some touring. I mapped out our route that afternoon and it only came to about 2.5 miles but it sure felt longer. It was amazing views and scenery, especially, but not limited to, the old restored homes.

Phoebe enjoyed it but wanted off after a few minutes.

I notice I was behind everyone in many of the pics. I really had to make myself keep moving. I just wanted to capture every intricate detail of this neighborhood.

IMG_1336.jpg

A butterfly landed on Tim's butt which Tessa thought was hilarious. Okay, we all did. Especially me, since after 15 years of marriage he still tries to convince me that his farts smell like roses.

We discovered the East Bay Playground and had to let the girls relax for a bit.

Tessa loved this spinny thing.

Continuing on our walk...
IMG_1428a.jpg

We walked along a boardwalk type of path next to the river on E. Battery.
IMG_1420.jpg

The homes there were incredibly ornate and grand.

IMG_1436.jpg

We asked a lady who was out walking for exercise (thinking she must be a local - no camera or guide book) about the doors to the porches we kept seeing. She said that the rich families liked to show off their homes and gardens for passers-by and would leave the door open if they were receiving visitors. If it was closed, you could still appreciate the beauty (and their wealth) but you knew not to bother the residents. We wondered if this is where the term "open door policy" comes from?

At the end of the street we had to choose to continue along the waterfront or turn back north along one of the streets that ended where we were; White point Garden, aka The Battery. It was basically a park with lots of memorials. I didn't take pics of any of the statues dedicated to people I don't know who defended the confederacy. Sorry. I did take this of Tessa and her now infamous "Coconut butt". Much more interesting, don't you think?
IMG_1432-1.jpg

Walking back north now, along Meeting St. This is the Calhoun Mansion. I copied this from their website:
"...built in 1876 by George W. Williams for $200,000.00 and the lot itself was purchased for $40,000.00 (Confederate Currency).

...24,000 square foot structure has 14 foot ceilings, ornate plaster and wood moldings, elaborate chandeliers, a stairwell that reaches to a 75 foot domed ceiling, and a music room with a 45 foot covered glass skylight.

...After Mr. Williams's death in 1903, the house went through a succession of occupants and uses, gradually deteriorating until, in 1972, it was condemned .The house was subsequently purchased by a Charleston native who spent the next 25 years and 5 million dollars restoring it." Just a good reminder of why we were not actually touring any of the insides of these homes!
IMG_1439.jpg

Tim loved these round porches.

First Scots Presbyterian Church (1814). There are quite a few tombstones dated in the 1700's but we did not go in and look.

Which is back to where we parked. It was obviously dark and we were hungry, but since it was so late we figured we should avoid another sit down meal with the kids. We loaded up, headed back to North Charleston around 8:30 and found a good place called the East Bay Deli near our hotel that was getting ready to close. We got the food to go and ate a late dinner in our hotel's breakfast room then headed up to bed.

Wonderful update! Your pictures are just beautiful! :thumbsup2
I'm glad Tessa didn't go exploring again! The pictures of her in the fountain are adorable! And Phoebe, what a beauty!

Great update!!! Yeah, when you first get off I-26 to go into downtown, the neighborhood is a bit of a nail-biter. It's been like that for as long as I can remember.

Beautiful pictures!!! Thanks for all the gorgeous shots you got of my hometown! It makes me want to go back right now!

What did you think of Hyman's? It's definitely a very popular place! My mouth is watering at the thought of all that yummy seafood.

The bench you were all sitting on is called a Joggling Board and is very common in the Lowcountry. You can even buy one for your very own.

Did you happen to look out on the harbor while you were walking along the Battery? You can see Fort Sumter from there where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.

Okay, I am ready for your next update! Is it more Charleston fun or were you headed somewhere else? :goodvibes

What gorgeous pictures! I want to go there now!! My favorite is the one with Tim walking with both girls :)

Beautiful pictures!

That food looks so good! The hush puppies are calling my name :lmao:

Too funny about the butterfly landing on Tim

Looks like Phoebe and Tessa both enjoyed the playground too cute!:cutie:

Sounds like it was a great day!

Awesome pics! I love that the town has so much history!

I guess we do here, too...but I have no idea what it is! I need to be a tourist here, I suppose. :rotfl:

Don't you just love Charleston? It is a wonderful place with so many photo ops as you discovered. As ususal your pics are the top. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Melissa....

Your pictures are amazing! Love the history lesson too! Seems like you had a lot of time to explore and the kids (from the pics) seemed to be going along with it!

Love the fountain pics of the girls too! princess:princess:

Wow!! I took most of the day, but I just read your Tr and loved every min. of it. What a great job you did. Sorry you had all that rain in the beginning. I loved looking at all the pictures. The girls are so beatiful. Loved all the dresses. Glad you stood up and got the window sit at the Castle. Thank you for the FYI about the BBB. So glad your second trip to WDW was better.

I know you asked awhile ago about the muscle biopsy, but just wanted to let you know that Kylee had one and it was that bad. She limped a couple of days, but that was it. Can't really see her scar now.

Wonderful update! Your pictures are just beautiful! :thumbsup2
I'm glad Tessa didn't go exploring again! The pictures of her in the fountain are adorable! And Phoebe, what a beauty!

Thanks! I love having them as my little models.

We talked about moving there. We totally loved it!

What did you think of Hyman's? It's definitely a very popular place! My mouth is watering at the thought of all that yummy seafood.

We really liked it. It was hard to enjoy with Tessa being a pill, but the food was definitely good! We weren't 100% sold on the boiled peanuts, but I suppose that's an acquired taste.:confused3

The bench you were all sitting on is called a Joggling Board and is very common in the Lowcountry. You can even buy one for your very own.

Why is it called that? Do you know the history? (I guess I can google it, lol) We tried putting Phoebe on it, because she loves to rock and swing, but I guess since it went side to side she didn't like it. :rotfl:

Did you happen to look out on the harbor while you were walking along the Battery? You can see Fort Sumter from there where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.

We did look out. Heather saw a dolphin, she thinks. We had a hard time choosing what to see since we only spent a couple of days. I SO want to go back!

Okay, I am ready for your next update! Is it more Charleston fun or were you headed somewhere else? :goodvibes

We have one more day in that area, but not downtown...stay tuned!

What gorgeous pictures! I want to go there now!! My favorite is the one with Tim walking with both girls :)

Yep, mine too! I made it my new desktop background. :cloud9: Thank you!

Thanks! It was a pretty fun day considering all we did was walk around.

Awesome pics! I love that the town has so much history!

I guess we do here, too...but I have no idea what it is! I need to be a tourist here, I suppose. :rotfl:

I know what you mean. Tim has yet to see any of the missions here and we drive past two of them all the time!

Don't you just love Charleston? It is a wonderful place with so many photo ops as you discovered. As ususal your pics are the top. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Once again, the pleasure is all mine. I love sharing them with people who want to see. :goodvibes I was in photo heaven!

Thanks! Yeah, they seemed to enjoy it right until the last stretch 'cause they were getting tired and hungry.

Wow, you must have tired eyes!:surfweb: I'm so glad we ditched our calendar and did MK again.

I know you asked awhile ago about the muscle biopsy, but just wanted to let you know that Kylee had one and it was that bad. She limped a couple of days, but that was it. Can't really see her scar now.

Okay, good to know. For now they are not talking more about it but we have another appt with the doc who mentioned it next month. We'll see....
