Squirrel! Update.

And that's all well and good except that when you go into a topic about a rescued squirrel this isn't about the struggle of tomato vs. predator, or the artful arrangement of trees. It's much like going into a topic about a rescued dog and someone posting about how they don't care for them and find them a nuisance. Or going to a daycare board and posting about how someone doesn't like children. There are honestly some animals I have a phobia of, but I recognize that they are still needed and quite frankly I don't go out of my way to take my viewpoint to those who love and appreciate those species. This is a beautiful little topic about a saved life that brightened my day (And I'm sure I'm not alone in that), but it would be a brighter happier topic if the message were kept positive.

I did say "very cute".
I'm happy for poster, I'm even happy for the squirrel. Hey any squirrel off the streets is one less that might resort to stealing my tomatoes.
And don't get me wrong , had the poster taken in a "City Planner" I would have told him how much I hate them to. All they plant now are these little freaking trees that root down and don't rip up the sidewalks.
So no more chestnut trees no more acorn (Oak) I think trees. So what choice do the squirrels have? They should have made the squirrels the city planners with a little guidance on where to plant the trees their ecosystem and my tomatoes could have been saved. Lets just hope when the revolution comes the squirrels don't take it out on our whole species and just go after the City Planners.

I do take back the squirrels not being smart enough like the other animals to get the message. I mean their food source remained pretty much till these darn city planners got a foothold and most of the oaks and chestnuts fell.

Back in the mid 60's my siblings and I took in a young starling bird we found in our yard. Kept it in a cage and fed it worms until it was up and about. We released it a couple of months later and it hung around our yard, landing on our heads and sitting on our porch. It was too trusting though as a neighbors cat jumped it on our porch and killed it in front of us.

We protect our tomatoes by an electric fence stung up above our wooden one. The wooden one protects the tomatoes from the deer; the electric wires along top protect them from the squirrels. It's been very effective.

Here's girl squirrel eating her first pecan. She grabbed it and ate the whole thing! She still takes a bottle 3 times a day but is getting more into solid food and she is chewing on the wood in her cage. All very good signs. She has been happy running around on our arms and shoulders, but she acting like she wants to go offroad now. Typical adolescent. She will be weaned soon and we are going to let her go. We have a couple trips coming up though so we will have friends take care of her and we'll release her 3rd week of October. We want to be home
in case she needs anything.70198450_10219449675103732_2734837090201108480_o.jpg

I thought squirrels couldn’t survive without a family? I thought you should never rehome them because it was cruel, that squirrels were like little gangs with territories.

No, they operate independently.

Squirrels are destructive vermin and we do everything we can do discourage them from being on our property. They are nothing more than rats with bushy tails.
I agree though the above stories are very cute and I never heard of squirrels being such cute little things. A friend of mine in Chicago had a squirrel get in his house and reaped havoc. The thing literally chewed His crown molding in great woodwork you had in the house and decided to take up residence inside their couch. They simply cannot catch this thing and were told that they might have to destroy the couch to get to the squirrel. I guess a trap was not working or something? I could have the story wrong but anyways the crazy thing was is that for insurance purposes this Squirrel is considered Vernin and Their policy had an exclusion for that so they got stuck with thousands and thousands in damages. My friend had this awesome brownstone in the city and a lot of old woodwork was destroyed.

We have tons of squirrels and they never bother our tomato plants. They must really hate you ;)
This is really the first year. I am wondering if it was so dry. I was lucky guy down the block they took almost his whole garden. First tomatoes then peppers he would chase them away. I read in one article if you try to go after them they actually get worse and take more. Probably out of spite. I also have a dashhound who would keep them at bay a little. They always take all my sunflowers at end of the year but thats okay cause I don't do anything with seeds. But I'm thinking about not growing anymore sunflowers. Probably out of spite.
