Spring Break Woes

I am a teacher, and my DD is enrolled in a school that is in a different school system from the one I teach in. This year, our spring break was in March -- the 2nd week. She's on break this week. Although this is her first year in school, I've known that it's been like this the entire time I've been teaching at my school (4 years now).

Our official calendar for next year has just been approved, and our spring break will be in April next year.

I talked to a teacher from her school today, and he said they decided that next year their spring break will be in March! I got to have two whole days of excitement at the thought that we would be on break at the same time next year.

They are also taking out their fall break in October (we'll get a week) and giving them a full week at Thanksgiving (we get three days). I guess I should just be grateful that we'll technically start and end at the same time.

So much for that theory of teaching so you can be off when your child is off.

Anyone else have a similar experience with school calendars?

At one point we had 4 different school calendars. Dh and I both teach but not in the same district that ds's went to elementary school or the same district that they went to high school too (a regional high school)

It is very difficult. Dh and I were supposed to have the same break this year but I had to make up snow days so I lost 3 days.

Since you teach in the district can your DD go there? I know here we had spring break first week in April each year. It was a week or 2 before our state testing. Then last year they changed it to last week in April which is AFTER state testing. We have spring break a month before end of school. sheeesh.

We had to make up one snow day, and they chose Good Friday. DD's district had to make up 2 "weather days" (one day that should have been just delayed for bad weather, and the other was a snow day); they already have one built in to their calendar. The second day, they just decided to add a day to the end of the school year. I put in for a personal day because her school was closed for Good Friday and the daycare was closed, too.

Don't get me wrong...I love my school...but I wouldn't put her in my system. I could give a variety of reasons, but to be so far from home (I teach 2 counties away, a 30 mile drive one way) and still have her a couple of miles away...I don't think I could leave to get her, and I'm not so sure about the bus bringing her to the high school and dropping her off, especially since the buses pick up for us then go to the elementary school.

The hope is that someday I'll have a job at her school (a K-12), but right now, I have tenure where I am, and with the economy being what it is, I'd be afraid to leave where I am and start over. My parents can get her if there is a complete disaster at her school, I know she's at a good school where I know lots of the staff/faculty. I just wish everyone could sync up their calendars sometimes.

I work in our local school district. Until a few years ago, both of my boys were in the district and it made vacations so easy. I could even be home with them on teacher work days since aides don't have to work them. The year before last, we transferred my older son to a private school for kids with Asperger's. The first year he was there, we had different spring breaks. His came first and I had to take him to my parents' house everyday since I couldn't leave him alone. A few weeks later, I was off with my younger one and the older one had to go to school. He had such a hard time having to get up and get on the bus when the rest of us were staying home. Plus, I didn't want to do anything fun with the younger one and leave the older one out. Luckily, last year and this year we've had the same spring break. In fact, we all out of school right now!
