Quick Trip report – March 20th –March 27th 2005. This trip was going to be just Universal, IOA, Wet N Wild, and Sea World for the week, no Disney at all other than 1 night of Disney Quest. We just thought the crowds at Disney would be too big to have any fun. After going off season when you can almost walk on the rides, its hard to wait 90 minutes for something you’ve already done, at least to us.

Sunday March 20th we flew from Moline, Il to Orlando via Delta. I didn’t really like the itinerary since we had two 20 minute layovers, in Cincinnati and Huntsville, AL, but the flights went great and I would go that route again in a heartbeat.

We had a National car that I used the Sams club rate. It was the best I could find for the week, but only by a couple of dollars.

Our first two nights were at the Sheraton Studio City. We were in room 1213 which had a good view of Wet n Wild and IOA. We didn’t do much at the hotel, but it’s a nice place to stay and for Universal, it’s a great location.

Sunday afternoon and Monday morning we went to Sea World. We all thought this place was packed! Monday we got to the park early and got to Kraken right at 9 when they dropped the rope. Sea World does not open till 9 am, that what it says on the signs and they stick to it. IOA an USF both were letting guests in early. We were on rides at 8:45 at IOA a couple of times. Kraken is a great coaster. I would be hard pressed to list my favorites between Hulk, Fire and Ice and Kraken, they all are great in there own way. Hulk has that great starting shot to get you going, but suspended coasters are more fun for us. I think Kraken is probably more fun than Fire or Ice, but when you add the close calls of Fire and Ice intertwining, it really makes them great.

Monday afternoon we went to Downtown Disney to eat at our favorite, Rainforest Café and go to Disney Quest. We joined the Rainforest Safari Club a couple months ago, and that was worth it for us. I think it cost $15 for the year, but we got a $10 gift certificate plus 10% off our meals or a free appetizer, plus 10% off merchandise purchases. There was a 45 minute wait when we got there, but one flip of the membership card and we were instantly swept to our seats. Very nice perk. Disney Quest was OK, we’ve been there a few times, so nothing new but it was fun. Seems like the new trend is for parents to stay in line for the major attractions and let the kids run wild, then right before its there turn, the whole family of 50 magically appears right in front of you. I don’t really agree with this, only seems fair to make everyone who’s going to ride stay in line.

Tuesday we moved to the Hard Rock and Universal. We had a club room booked but had requested either a deluxe, kids suite, or pool view if the deluxe weren’t available. I think its odd that you can’t directly book any of those rooms. We were told that the hotel was full and made to feel that we were lucky to have a room at all. I had only made our reservations 8 months ago. We got room 7017, overlooking the roof of the valet parking in front of the hotel. We thought about complaining and seeing if we could change rooms the next day, but didn’t, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Its fun to be able to see Hulk running from a pool room view, but oh well.

We had ok weather for the week, the sun didn’t come out till Sunday as we were leaving though. It was warm enough for the pools and shorts all week, but the sun would have been a nice plus. We went to Wet N Wild on Thursday for a few hours in the morning. It was a little chilly, but not bad. We left at about 11:30, the lines were getting really long and we were hungry. I think our theme for the week was “a couple hours at a time”. We would only stay at a park for a couple hours then either go back to the hotel or switch parks. I think we avoided noon – 4 in the parks most days just because of the crowds. At IOA, we could get there first thing and ride Hulk, Spidey, Fire & Ice by 9:40 with no real waits, even in the regular lines. By 11, we would have a good 10 minute wait with our FOTL, but that’s not bad compared to the regular lines. FOTL was unlimited and they were only scanning our room cards on Hulk, and that was the first day only. Our first day, the scanner flashed red our second time thru and said it had only been 11 minutes since our last ride, but the guy just laughed and waived us thru.

On Friday we had cabana 10, the Stevie Wonder cabana at the HRH pool. We went to the park and rode Fire and Ice in the front rows of each, then went back to the pool. We just work our suits under our clothes so we could go back and forth to the parks and the cabana without having to run to our room and change each time. After a few hours and some great service at the pool, my son and I ran back to ride Mummy and MIB. It had just started to sprinkle as we left MIB so we hurried back and got caught in a pretty good rain right as we got to the cabana. A couple of minutes later, they closed the pool and kicked us out of the cabana. The pool never reopened and we did get our money back for the cabana, but we had to ask twice. I guess the rule is that if the pool closes for more than 4 hours between 9am – 9pm, they don’t charge you.

Saturday was the Mardi Gras parade and concert. We went to this parade two years ago and comparing them, we liked the old one better. This was fun, just didn’t seem like it was as big as the old one. I couldn’t believe how crowded the concert was. At about 7pm we scoped out the concert area to see if there was a good place to watch the parade and concert from, but that area was already pretty full. We decided to go down one of the side streets that were less crowded and watch the parade. I think it was about 7:40 when we found some sidewalk to sit on. At 9 when the parade started, the streets all looked to be packed. The kids got their share of beads and we listened to a few songs before turning in.

We ate at Margaritaville a couple of times, NBA city, and the Latin Quarter. Latin Quarter was really good, the room key worked good for getting us a table as they were busy. NBA city was ok, nothing special. And while we like Margaritaville, the burgers seemed really greasy this time. The best meal of the week came from a Buffalo Wild Wing place on International drive, those were fantastic! I-Drive, by the way, was crazy busy all week. When your from a small town in the Midwest, its hard to get used to traffic that doesn’t move like that.

On Sunday the 27th we flew home via Airtran thru Atlanta. I guess we were pretty lucky to get home with all the storms in Atlanta. Our flights were delayed, but we made it home about 2 hours later than scheduled on some fairly bumpy flights. Our flight attendant told me we were lucky to get in and out as most of Atlanta airport was closed, and the reclosed the south side again right after we took off.

All in all, it was a fun week, but two or three days at Universal would have been plenty. Since we had pretty much seen and done everything but the Mummy before, I guess it just wasn’t as exciting. On the other hand, were glad we didn’t do Disney because of how bad the crowds were. I doubt we would go back at Easter or any peak time again. Even with FOTL, I get uncomfortable trying to weave thru crowds that size with the kids. Next year our spring break is a month before Easter, maybe we’ll try Disney again then.

Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll try to answer as best I can.

Thanks for sharing your input! Sounds like you enjoyed your trip!

Great trip report..thanks!
I was wondering if you could elaborate on your club room experience at the Hard Rock Hotel. What was the lounge like? Was is crowded? Is the food any good and did you kids like it? Also, just wondering if the kids can hang out and watch movies in there...I heard it was set up for that, but I haven't heard anyone comment on it or have their kids do that.
Trying to decide if the club price is worth what you get or to stay in garden room or deluxe. Here's the price difference for us for 4 nights:

Garden Room 4 nights all taxes APH rate ~$740
Deluxe Room 4 nights all taxes APH rate ~$920 (+$180 from garden)
Club room 4 nights all taxes APH rate ~1140 (+$220 from deluxe)

There are 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 girls 9, 7 & 2. :earsgirl: :earsgirl: :cutie:
I can't decide!!! :confused3

I want to go luxury and do the club, but we would be sacrificing room size from the club. (since this trip is costing so much anyways, we will be staying at another hotel + doing disney and Seaworld what's a few more hundred for upgrading to club?) Plus my girls love to snack~

Or I could just do a garden room and save $400 bucks all together on the hotel and just be glad we have FOTL and are staying there. And buy food for the room and get a refridge for $25 for the stay. One more note, we are renting a cabana on Mother's Day, so if we have club level we can save $70 bucks on our cabana.

Thanks for any input!!! :flower:

shl1108,
We've stayed club 3 or 4 times now and regular rooms twice. We do enjoy the extra ammentities. For $100 per night, I would probably do club again for the 4 of us, my kids are 8 & 10. For 5 however, I think the deluxe would work better. Not sure what the cost is, but I think you can reserve a deluxe with club priveledges, it might be on the 6th floor not the 7th. If I'm right, I thought the deluxe has a small sofa couch plus two beds. We wanted a deluxe or one of the kids suites, but no luck. Snacks were ok, we used the club like this most days-
Get up and grab a couple of donuts or toast for breakfast, we're not big breakfast people anyway, but they always had great fresh donuts. This was between 7:30 and 8am and would tied us over until lunch. Lunch was usually our big meal for the day, then we went back to the club at 5 after getting cleaned up for the evening and had snacks. They had different pastas, chicken wings, chips and dip, plus cheese and veggies. I would have a few beers and the kids would have a couple different things then we would head back out to the parks. Most nights we just grabbed a late snack from the parks or Emack & Bolios instead of dinner. Maybe a turkey leg or sundae. Since the parks were open till 10, we never made it back for the late night snacks so I can't really comment on those.

Saving $50 on the cabana was a nice perk. Between breakfasts, beer, and the cabana, I think it was well worth the $100 a night. My kids don't sleep well together, if yours do, then the room shouldn't be too big of an issue. We brought a twin inflatable camping mattress ($10 Walmart) and the kids took turns between that and the bed. There was just enough room for it if we moved the chair and ottomon into the corner more.

My only real complaint about the club level is that you can't get a room preference. Why can you book a garden/water view regular room, but not club? They should charge those differently, as next time we would almost rather have a great view than the club and with club you can't be assured of any view.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info on the club level. I have been leaning that way, but apparently I have needed convincing to spend the extra dough.

My kids do sleep fine together..they are slim girls and when they crash they crash. The baby can sleep in a crib. I"ll try for the deluxe club when we get there.

Did you happen to use the lounge area at all (kids movies/games)? I don't know if that is even worth mentioning. Just the convenience of having the snacks and breakfast sounds easy. Do they check room cards? If someone has visitors in their room, can they easily get into the lounge? I know it is a card controlled elevator to that floor, but if someone has friends with them I wonder if they know.

Thanks again!!

Great report! Kraken was my first coaster ride and it was awesome!
I forgot about the DQ tickets. My son found them and wanted to go and see if there was any days left! Sheraton Studio City is pretty nice and has easy access to the parks.
Too bad you got short changed on the view with club level prices.

I would think it would be easy to sneak a friend in. They have never check id's when we've been there.

The club was pretty busy around most snack times this year, but we have used the club and watched movies in there before. Last year, our son wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go to the parks the day we checked in. Since our room wasn't ready (of course) we went up to the club with our temporary cards and watched a movie and rested on the couch for a couple hours.

This year, we packed a portable dvd player for the plane ride and a small case with a dozen or so movies. I also brought the rca cables for it and hooked it up to the tv in our room, worked great for watching a movie at bedtime for the kids.

Sorry Motherfletcher, those were only one day tickets to DQ. I don't think we'll be back anytime this year, we are thinking of next March, but I don't know if we'll stay at Universal next time at all. We just didn't seem to get thrilled this time. Maybe we've had such great trips in the past our sights were set pretty high for this one. While I can't complain about any of the help at the parks or hotels, there just seemed to be more of an "I don't care, I get off soon" type attitude.

Great trip report! Thank you for sharing! I didn't realize there was a BW3's (Buffalo Wild Wings) on International Drive. Myself & a few friends used to go there quite often on Tuesday's & Wednesday's for $0.35 wings & $0.50 legs. Their Thai, Hot BBQ & Caribbean Jerk sauces are so good. Okay, now I'm hungry. Anyway, thanks again for the great trip report! :)

The wing specials were $ .50 on Tuesdays or Wednesdays now, didn't see any .35 wings specials. They are worth the price either way though!
Thanks

we were also there spring break and absolutely loved it, we stayed at rpr and loved it, only thing that upset us was that the kiddie pool wasn't opened, thought it should be opened for such a busy week. also even though it was crowded, we never really felt it. fotl works great and we never waited for than 15min and that was for the more popular rides. if anyone has ?'s i'll be glad to answer them.

Thanks for this. We were in Orlando for spring break too, and decided that next time we go to Florida we'll go when the kids are older and split between a US hotel and a Disney one.

And we were at the airport on 27/3 waiting for our delayed plane and hoping the storms wouldn't stop us taking off!
