Spreading the magic... Is this possible/OK?

Let's say I'm looking for a ADR for a party of 5 but happen to see one pop up for a party of 8 (but not less). If I book it to be able to have a reservation at all (I guess I'm assuming this part is OK to begin with...) can I then try to find a party of up to 3 in the standby line who might like to sit with us? Would *love* to spread the magic while also getting an ADR I'm searching for if something like this comes up.

There is no standby line. Since people will either be turned away if no tables are available and therefore not waiting at all or be told they can have their own table, I'm not seeing this happening.

Nice sentiment that can fail in so many ways in execution. Besides assuming they don't stick you w the bill, what if they are unpleasant people or eaters?

I feel like I should be more specific. The only two experiences I've had with ADRs are 'Ohana dinner and BOG lunch. Maybe I just hit the exceptions but in both cases there was a "standby" line (loooong for both) separate from the line for people with reservations (although the BOG ADR line was nonexistent, just walked up, this was when it was a Fastpass). I was thinking I'd be able to ask folks in the standby line if anyone was a party of say 3 or less and if so we had extra seats on our reservation they could use if they'd like until I found a taker. Heck, at BOG I would think they could likely even get their own table. Just seemed like a nice way to share some magic if we had extra seats.
