Spray painting..

I have two metal cabinets that I need to spray paint and I have never, ever been able to get the hang of that so I get a nice even paint job.. I always end up with heavy "circles" in the center or some other nonsense..

What am I doing wrong? And what is the trick to getting it right ??

Both metal cabinets will be white and the spray paint is specifically for metal cabinets, appliances, etc..

ok there are some tricks to it.. start on a scrap of woodf, or an old cardboard box..


hit the button and spray from one side all the way across in one sweep with out stopping or "backtracking" then release button on opposite side.. try going in one direction each time until you get the hang of start spray, sweep across let go, then you can go both ways. lap your spray about half again with each stroke.

a little practice and you can spray a good smootht coat.

As posted above, but I want to add, very light layers, and many of them. make for a smoother finish.

Darn it takes me forever to post anything now, since I have to go back and take out my leaders .........and put in comma's, thanks to the thread where people said they didn't like them LOL!

Yep..I agree that lots of light layers is the trick! If you do too much it will run. Light layers will give you good coverage and a nice finish. Also, keep the nozzle clean and buy the better quality paint.

just DONT do it like you see on trading spaces! It always annoys me when they just hold the nozzle down and spray away....froggy's explaination was perfect!

Agree with everyone else AND - be far away!!! - long, light, layers looks best.

One big problem is when people use a sweeping motion they stand at the center of the object.

So you start at the end 6 inches away as recomended and you spray across you body it's more of a circular motion so you are most likely 2 or 3 inches at the center of the object.

So make sure like other have said to do many small layers but pay attention to keeping a steady distance away from the object and one continous spray from one side to the other.

Thanks all! Haven't felt too good the past two days (nothing serious - just a really bad stomach ache) so I haven't made any attempts yet..

I'll have to leave here (the lake) soon to help with the rest of the move preparation, see my doctor, and then the actual move itself, but eventually I'll get to it..

I think many of you have hit the nail right on the head - I have always stood in the "center" of the item! No wonder I end up with those heavier spots in the center - LOL..

I'll let you know how it all turns out when and if I ever get the chance to get it done..
