spray painting light fixtures?

Has anyone tried to spray paint light fixtures? I am redecorating my bathroom into what else a "Mickey Mouse" theme. My current light fixtures are gold and, of course, will not match my theme. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried spray painting any bathroom fixtures? I was hoping I could find a nice platinum or silver gloss but I'm really not sure if it will work.

They do it on those home improvement shows all the time.

I did my bathroom light fixtures just like they do on all those shows on TV. They were a bronze color and we were redoing in chrome. I didn't want to pay the price for new fixtures, so I painted and just bought new globes. They look great BTW.

Yup...

I did all the brass light fixtures and chandeliers in my house to a hammered metal color.

Looks great!

It is a bit fragile if something bangs into it, but luckily lights aren't something that get touched, so they are holding up fine.

Not inside, but when we were getting ready to put our house up for sale DH took down the outside lanterns, lightly sanded any rust off, and gave them a light coat of spray paint to freshen them up a bit.

It was a cheap fix that added a ton of "curb appeal"! :thumbsup2

See these?

I know it's hard to see, but they were bronze and I used a metal wash over them to turn them pewter, then I painted them with black craft paint, wiped off the excess and sealed them.

I did the same thing to the vanity hardware, which was brushed brass.

I'd be happy to take a closer shot of them if you'd like!

Thanks so much! I wasn't really sure if it would work or not. Did you lightly sand the glossy brass/gold finish then spray paint them? I love the idea of putting the black craft paint over them. I really think I'm going to try that. What type of sealant product did you use? Did you find it only took one coat or multiple coats? I think I found my project for this weekend.

I painted the ceiling fans in my girl's rooms. One is now silver metallic and the other bright yellow. It was pretty easy, I just made sure to cover the electronic parts and sprayed them.

I didn't sand them, but I used the same sealant on them first. These were the directions on the kit that I purchased. I know it's holding up well, because the handles on the vanity doors are as good today, as they were a year ago when I refinished them.

I've also refinished lamps, picture frames and ceiling fans. On the lamps and frames, I used different shades of brown and deep reds (for an iron look) and sponged them on the lamps and you'd never know that they weren't iron. In the bathroom, I wanted something that would withstand handling, so I went with the metal wash.

(I've never let color influence my purchases when I know I can change it. DH was VERY skeptical until he saw how the sconces turned out. Now, he's all for it, because he knows it gets him out of a longer shopping trip. )

The stuff I used came from Michael's, but it's up so high in the garage that I can't see the name of it. It's literally metal in the liquid form and it comes in several different colors, like gold, silver, verdi (which I've refinished some outdoor fixtures with) and pewter.

Here's another view. You can see the black on them better.
