Can anyone tell me why my cotton shirts have small, oily looking spots on them after coming out of the wash! It almost looks as if an oily something dripped on them. They didn't have them before being washed, just after.

Do you use liquid fabric softener? If so, this may very well be the culprit.

If you do use liquid fabric softener, I wouldn't add it to the machine until the machine is full with water for the final rinse AND dilute the fabric softener with water before adding it to the machine.

No, sorry, I should have stated what I use. I wash the clothes in powder Gain with some oxyclean added in. If I do a fabric softener, I do a free and clear sheet.

YES. Been there, done that. And I noticed it was on clean wet clothing coming out of the washer. I first I had thought it was happening in the dryer. (I noticed it on white towels). I even asked about it here and was told it was the transmission or something. I was still under warranty, yet the repair man found nothing. Said my model did not have a transmission that could leak oil. (I have regular top loader). But he gave me a few tips.

I cleaned the washer around the inside top, but the problem seemed to be inside the softener dispenser. The repairman mentioned that, and I said no no no, I never use that. But it was a bit dirty inside there, and maybe some liquid detergent got in there somehow, and mixed with some dirt and formed a sort of greasy combo. It was not a lot.

It solved the problem. I was so stumped, because I use bleach on those white towels, and they were coming out with stains. Good luck.

When I was a kid our agitator broke on our washer and the repairman told my mom it was from using powdered detergent. He said it's bad for the washer.
Sorry I can't help you with your spots but just thought I'd mention about the powdered soap.

Had that happen once. Repairman said the washer was going and needed to be replaced.

What kind of detergent you are using? I have noticed there are lots of fans of Purex 3 in 1 sheets on this board and I had problems with them leaving spots on my clothes. It seems to be a pretty common problem with them.

When my son was a baby, my MIL washed his clothes with bleach. He was on a formula with iron in it. Dark spots ruined everything-reaction between the iron and the bleach. Another friend using well water experienced the same problem.

Could someone have left something in the pocket??? Happened to us with a chapstick once,

No, it actually looks like someone was eating greasy chicken and drops of grease fell onto the shirts. It really shows on the colored cotton tees. I have to treat with a mixture of Oxyclean and Shout and rewash them.

OMG I have that problem! I always assumed I was a slob and just missing things to pretreat before I washed, lol! I can say that once they get on, I can't get them out - if I don't notice, no amount of oxy clean soaking seems to get rid of it. Anxious to figure out an answer.

I have found that if you make a paste of oxyclean and shout and let it sit while to tubis filling then throw it in, it usually works.

I use Gain but have had the same problem with Tide and Tide pods.

This is happening to us too and has been stumping me. When I do see the spots, I spray with oxyclean and throw back in the wash and it is usually fine. But why does it keep happening?
The really weird thing is, that I attributed it to our HE washing machine and we actually got rid of it and bought a top loader. But we have the problem still or again. :confused3

I thought it was my detergent but I've switched several times and it's still happening.

I have a regular top load washer.

Had they happening on our clothes. It was especially annoying on the brand new clothes. The washer needed replacing, nothing solved the issue. I tried a sorts of fixes for the spots but nothing worked. It was a top loading machine and the spots appeared to be about the same size as the holes that the water drains out of on the drum. It didn't happen on everything that was spun against the drum though. Weird.

This is funny, because on an appliance forum (laundry) the pros say that liquid detergent is bad for your machine and recommend powder!

It's not you. It happened to us when we had a top loader and now that we have a front load machine. We don't use softener. We've used different detergents and it still happens.

DH has gone through many a white dress shirt because of the spots. Sometimes they are clear, sometimes almost bluish. It's really annoying.

I used to get those spots all the time. A friend suggested I start putting a cup or two of white vinegar in with the wash, after I started doing that the spots are gone and haven't returned. It ended up being a very cheap remedy.

Do you do put in every load? And did it get rid of the spots that were already on the clothes (previously)? This is so annoying, and I am glad to read of others with the same problem!
