Spontaneous trip-- seeking advise

We decided last night to surprise our son with a trip to Disneyland for his 6th birthday. This is only our second trip and we would love any good tricks and tips since we don't have much time to plan.

Details: driving down with 3 kids ages 2, 6, and 8
Thinking about staying at the Residence Inn Maingate- any experience? We stayed at Desert Palms Inn & Suites back in May 2010 and walked to DLR every time (4 days). Is walking distance from RI Maingate comparable?

Our kids like Frozen, Disney Jr. Shows like Doc and Mickey Mouse Club House, Sofia the First, Toy Story and Star Wars.

We will be there Feb 13-16. Anything special to do related to Valentines Day? Is the Anna and Elsa meet and greet worth the wait? How do we get our son picked for the light saber battle? What other special things should we do? TIA

I have only been one time. Five years ago and I am planning a return trip in August

We stayed at the Candy Cane Inn - walking distance and the best breakfast I have ever had. They also provide shuttle if you are too tired to walk.

When you enter, get your son a "Its My Birthday" pin at City Hall. He will be given special treatment all day! (ie, he should get picked if he is wearing it)

When we stay offsite, I love to stay at the Best Western Plus Park Place Inn and Mini Suites. It is directly across the street from the pedestrian crosswalk to get to Disneyland. You'd think it would be noisy because of this, but it's not! You get a free continental breakfast buffet with your room or mini suite. Can't say enough good things about it.
