okay, so my 3 and 1/2 year old has been requesting to watch SpongeBob Squarepants.... I have no idea how she knows what it is b/c she is my oldest child. I'm guessing she hears about SBSP at preschool..? Regardless, she wants to watch it...I tried to watch an episode to see if its appropriate, but turned it off after 5 minutes...I was thinking that once she saw it, she would think its boring- the humor going WAY over her head.... Boy was I wrong...I let her watch one episode to show her that she is too immature to understand, but she LOVES it!!!!! Does anyone else let their kids watch SBSP? If so, what are their ages....if you are anti-SBSP- can you tell me why?????
Thanks!
Clueless Mom....

This is soooo funny :lmao: . Just the other night, I mentioned to DH that I was so proud of the fact that dd5 doesn't watch Sponge Bob (nothing against Sponge Bob, it's just that I teach 3rd grade, and he is amazingly popular with my class...I get sick of hearing the voice imitations). Then, what do you know? She comes home from daycare talking about him...they watch it on rainy afternoons  !!!!! Now I've got to listen to her repeat "sponge bob SQUARE pants" all night long (the only words she knows ;))

My DD is 4 1/2 and she watches it on a daily basis. She knows the theme song, the characters, etc.....she even has her own pet snail named Gary. Anyhow I don't mind it at all and would prefer her watching SpongeBob on Nickolodeon than anything on Cartoon Network (with the exception of Scooby Doo & Tom & Jerry). Also we're ocean loving people so I figure I can chalk the love of Spongebob up to loving our home just as much as he loves his?? Does that justify it?

I don't see anything wrong with Spongebob - it's just SILLY. DD10 used to watch it when she was younger - 3-6 probably. (I often wonder what the guy who thought him up was "on" at the time!)

I let her watch most of Nick and Disney cartoons, during her pre-school years, and no harm done - she reads 3 grades above her grade level and made the honor roll all year in school this year, so I don't think I damaged her in anyway! She watched lots of Scooby and Pokemon too. The only one I really didn't like was the PowerPuff Girls - now that annoyed me!

She was out collection "Garys" after a rain storm this evening!

I think what attracts young kids to Spongebob is the bright colors of the show. Otherwise it's spoken really fast and really not geared for the preschool age group. I don't like it personally, because I prefer my kids to watch other types of shows. Cartoon Network is generally not watched in our house (except when Daddy's in charge :lmao: ). I don't let my son watch it, because he is just as entertained by playhouse disney shows (He's 2). DD8 has watched it but has outgrown it herself. It's not the worst thing in the world, but there are better shows out there, IMHO....

I think a little bit of SBSP goes a long way. I really don't like how the characters can be kind of mean or how over the top every emotion is. My ds is 5 and would happily settle down to a SBSP-fest. We watch every blue moon just so the show is not made to be a forbidden fruit, and luckily every time we watch it seems to be a rerun. I have good luck steering to another show -- we recently expanded our cable channels and have wonderful choices in PBS and Sprout and Noggin and then some more on On Demand, so a rerun of SBSP is quickly forgotten.

We watch Sprout here every night - she loves the Good Night Show and it really winds her down. Last year I forgot to send in her birthday announcement for the birthday show so she bugs me constantly to do it this year - her birthday is in October!!

Sorry an adult that loves SpongeBob here! My DS 5 has been watching it for a few years, it doesn't help that his brothers are quite a bit older then him. SpongeBob is funny and silly, most jokes do go over younger kids heads, but they make me laugh(kind of like how most animated movies have jokes only the parents would get)Definately nothing like some of the cartoons out there, think South Park and Family Guy, now those are pretty adult! Sad thing is my 2 oldest boys can quote verbatim from those shows and it takes everything in my power not to crack up laughing! :lmao:

My kids watch it and they love it. I don't mind and I watch it when I'm by myself on occasion.:happytv: It reminds me of Looney Tunes. Slapstick comedy for children while they have a lot of comedy for adults through the writing. My kids are 8,6, and 3. They aren't consummed by it and they never turn down playing outside to watch it.

I personally do not like Spongebob. I didn't like the whole "pie hole" thing. Also, it comes on at 6 am here and I can't stand how loud and obnoxious it is when I don't even have my eyes open yet. I like quiet mornings. :goodvibes

It's just soooo annoying to me.

Well, somehow my dd who was 2 at the time got my then 5 year old watching Spongebob - it's been a favorite every since - the theme song was probably the first song she sang! I don't love it - wish she had fallen in love with another show, but I don't see anything wrong with it - plus, at least it's one show they'll watch together!

Meow. ;)

Yes my kids ages 10, 8, and 5 watch SpongeBob or as DS called him when he was 3, my sponge! :lmao:

Do I think its always appropriate? No. Are there sexual undertones? Yes; bikini botton, he's a sponge, crabby patty, Sqidward's nose, etc,.

Does all that go over their heads at this point? Yes.

Our 2 1/2 , 6 and 11 year old all love Sponge Bob. I don't have an issue with the show. All and all Sponge Bob is a good guy and they can learn some lessons from him. But Sponge Bob goes under entertainment 100%! For me it is hard to find a show that a all three of our kids will watch.

My 20 month old loves it. I don't let her watch it too often but she does have 2 older brothers that watch. So when she watches television with them she'll catch an episode or 2. But, what's funny is she knows the song and tries to sing along.

We watch Sprout here every night - she loves the Good Night Show and it really winds her down. Last year I forgot to send in her birthday announcement for the birthday show so she bugs me constantly to do it this year - her birthday is in October!!

I have Sprout on demand...do you have a regular channel or on demand :confused3 ? The good night show sounds great!

My DD7 used to watch Spongebob, but she has pretty much grown out of it. It was a favorite when she was about 5 years old. Most of the time I had no problem with it and even found it funny. Occasionally, the episodes are rated Y7 instead of Y (rarely), and we had a small problem in our house with DD saying "stupid" because she heard it on Spongebob. She wasn't allowed to watch Spongebob for 3 days, and that solved the problem. She learned quickly that life can't always imitate art, at least not in our house!

DH and I think it is pretty funny, but it can also be SO annoying! :lmao:

We are a spongebob loving family:happytv: .We just thinks it funny.

Thanks everyone for your input! I guess most things in moderation are okay. :goodvibes

My 2 1/2 DS loves Spongebob. He watches it occasionally, although he'll rarely sit thru the whole episode. He has older nephews that watch it and he wants to be just like them....
