Splitting room costs and charges

My wife and I are travelling to Disney with another couple in two weeks. We are staying at the Polynesian for 7 nights and I reserved a room with a one night deposit. Since we are sharing a room, we want to split the room costs, tickets, and any charges made to room keys between two cards. Is this easy to do? We went last summer and stayed off property and the last time we stayed was 4 years ago at a value resort, so I can't quite remember how that worked.

Also, when I made the reservation, it was just the two of us going. If we check in with four, will they pop you with the extra $50 per night for the two extra people, or just ignore it like most hotels do?

1) Yes, you can do this.
2) Ask the check-in person at the Front Desk to "share" the room.
3) Each room key have its own credit card.
4) No need to split the bill with your guests afterward.
5) Some may balk at doing this - if so, ask for a manager and insist.


NOTE: This takes a few minutes, so be patient. Also, not many CM's know how to do this, so they might have to go and get help. You can do this at any resort.

NOTE: Although each person's charges will go to their respective card, there are some quirks in the system. The room rate will be divided, but sundry room charges (room service, internet, phone) will ALL be applied to the first card that uses it for those type of room charges.

I have been told by several CMs that we can't leave two cc's at checkin. that if we want, we can go to the front desk the night before we are to depart, and they can split the charges based on each room key, and then put the appropriate charges on the appropriate card.
So, RustyScupper...you are saying we can do the two cards at checkin? Do you know if you do that at all the resorts? Sure would be nice to checkin at BWV in Oct and be able to split the charges between the two families that will be in the 2 bdrm villa. Much easier than putting it all on my cc and then having the other mom give me a check. Is there a special way I should ask for this??

I was charged for the extra adult staying in my room.

Plan on paying and if the CM does not charge you the extra $50 per night then you will have been sprinked with pixie dust.

I certainly would not be upset since they make it clear it is their policy, but $25 per person per night for a couple of extra towels and water is absurd - especially for a $315 per night room. I travel for work and stay 60-70 nights per year on the road - mostly at Hilton properties. I've had my wife and some of her friends travel with me and haven't once been charged for extra occupants. But, I guess they have a right to do it if they make in clear in advance.

I would say you have been lucky.

Most hotels base their rates on two adults.
Take a look at a AAA tour book and you will see that most hotels do charge an extra fee.
A lot of hotels start charging fees for anyone over 12.
Disney charges when the 3 adult is 18 and over.

The method that RustyScupper is referring to is primarily used for Convention guests. Cast members and even management working at non-Convention resorts might not be familliar with the proceedure.

I don't see why it isn't feasible, but I wouldn't count on it being guaranteed doable.

I have tried many times to have the charges put on multiple credit cards ahead of time and have NEVER been able to find a CM that knows how.

So at values, we stop by each evening, get a printout, run it through the spreadsheet, and run charges the next morning. We make sure we finalize everything the night before we checkout.

When me and my friend stay at Ft. Wilderness, we only do that the night before checkout because of the larger limit.

With most of our traveling companions, we do it on the CCs before we leave instead of them writing me a check. They want their CC points as much as I do!!

We had a similar situation 2 years ago. We came across a GREAT rate. Another family went with us and when they called to book, they would not give them the same rate. So we ended up getting 2 rooms under our name. Only 1 credit card could be used for charges.
If they do allow 2 cards as someone else posted (but I don't think they do) I would not do it. It would be too easy for mistakes. The last think you want to do at check-out is check every detail on the bill.

I know you can do this! I've done it numerous times, both at the S/D hotels and Disney resorts. I've even checked in with my mother under her Florida rate and I paid for the entire room with my "Michigan" credit card.

My daughter and her boyfriend are coming down with me in December. We're getting 2 seperate rooms but we want them next to each other plus I wanted to get an AP rate(my AP) for both of them so we're on the same reservation. He plans on picking up thier tab on the company card(owners approval) and I figured he could just charge it at the end of the trip.

Yes. It is pretty easy. Each Key to the World Card has it's own number to make it easy to know who charged what. In May, my sister and my mom both charged to our room, which had MY CC imprinted for express checkout. On the night before check out, we stopped down at the front desk, asked for an account printout, went to the restaurant at SSR, got a snack, sat down and just added up each persons charges in about 5 minutes.

Then, mom and sis went to the desk, handed over their CC's and paid their amount. Next morning, the balance, which was our charges, were charged to my CC.

So if you are somewhere where noone seems to know how to do 2 CC's.....this method should work for you. But make sure they pay their portion the night before check out if you intend to use express check-out, since they had run my card and had the reciept on our door at 7 am!

I agree with you about the absurd prices for an extra adult. But the only insight I've found on here is "that's what hotels do, and be grateful it isn't more".

Yeah, that's one way to look at it; another way is, as implied above, "that's the hotel's policy for additional guests"; and figure it this way: $365 per night for four people is MUCH cheaper than $630 per night for two rooms.

It's when you try to split a one room res that you will encounter challenges. My guess is that 5% of Value and Moderate cast members know about the Shared reservations... (Coronado being the exception...)

We've always had multiple rooms when we've asked All-Star Resort check-in folks to do this and as I said before, they've NEVER been able to accomodate us. And with the $500 limit and three rooms charging to the same card, we had to go by the front desk every day to clear out the charges.

1) Yes, at all resorts.
2) But, like I said, some are not familiar with this.
3) They might have to refer to the instuction book to do it.
4) It happens EVERY DAY at many of the resorts.
5) By saying they can't do it, CM's don't have to worry about it.
6) Just tell them to have the room "SHARED" (that is the technical term).
7) If you really want it, just give up.
