Do the restaurants in the DLR allow two people to split a plate? My son is 11 and will not need an adult sized meal. I'd like to split some sit-down meals with him. Blue Bayou especially. Is this allowed? It is not in WDW.

Yes.

At blue bayou, they will charge a split plate fee of 4 or 5 dollars, but that gives you two nicely plated portions, and each of you will get your own salad, and enough bread on the table.

Other places don't seem to care who eats what.

The other option, if the 11 year old can handle it, is ordering kid's meals. I did that, though not with table service (just didn't eat table service on the trip), in January just for myself!

Cafe Orleans also charges the plate split fee. We just went and only one of us ordered a plate, and one ordered an appetizer.

Dh and I hanve done it at Blue Bayou. The do charge you for the split plate, but it is totally worth it since you both get your own sides. It was perfect for us since we were also able to enjoy dessert as well. Oftentimes we're too full from our meal, we don't even think about ordering dessert.

I guess it depends on your server at Blue Bayou. My mom and I split all the time, and sometimes they give us each a salad, and sometimes they tell us only one of us can have it. We can't even eat all of the entree even after we've split it.

We did the split plate thing last August and each of us got the side. Never has been a problem the last few years.

Actually, we go about 10 times a year, and December was the first time all last year that they gave us both a side. I hope that is the new trend, I guess we just didn't look hungry enough to have our own sides.:)

Do you mean they are not charging you the fee, but are being generous? Or are they charging you and then not giving you what you're supposed to get?

Nope, we were charged the fee every time, but were told only one person could get the salad or soup. We didn't know any differently, but now we do.

I have an eleven year old child and they allowed him to order a kids meal when we were there. The waitress said it was no problem, and we were honest about his age. He is also a big boy, as is his father, and is often mistaken as being older than his years.

My son ordered the Kids Cut Prime Rib and my husband ordered the adult portion of the Prime Rib. When they got to the table there was no difference in size for their meat portions. My son's meal was $10.99 and included a side of fruit, his drink, and rolls.

They also offer a kids Monte Cristo which features a PB&J which they deep fry and serve with the berry sauce. It is only 6.99 and my kiddo LOVED it!

You might order the kids meal for your son and then get an appetizer and one of their HUGE desserts. With all the food on the table, you will all leave full. If you skip ordering an adult entree and get the appetizer and desert as well as a kid's meal, you may well end up paying less than if you had gotten one meal and payed the split plate charge.

No experience with Blue Bayou here, but at any counter service, I order a kids meal. It is plenty of food and served with grapes and baby carrots.

Thanks for all the helpful information. We will be a family of six (all considered adults by Disney standards). Looks like we may be able to eat at some of the places we want without breaking the bank.

Check out the Trattoria in DCA. (beautiful outdoor setting if the weather cooperates). Large portions, DS like the kids pasta.

Been there twice & both times our food was good (not great) but a good value.

DW & I split an appetizer & an entre & she had a glass of wine. Had a great waiter. If we hadn't ordered desert & or left a tip....we would have spent as much (or more) at a crowded counter service place.

The menu is on AllEars.

Trattoria at DCA is awesome. If you like soup I highly recommend it and we loved the tiramiso(sp?). We ordered a bottle of wine (cheaper than two glasses) and took the remainder back to the hotel to enjoy after the kids fell asleep. We split at all of the restaurants. BB is the only one that has ever charged us a split fee, but they gave us both salads and sides. A few years ago, waiters (not just Disney) seemed upset at our preference...but lately, more and more waiters seem to get it. We are a family of four, we usually order one adult meal and two kids meals. Although, with DD10 (going on 25) we have been finding ourselves ordering two adults and one kids. In today's health conscious, money conscious, and huge portion society more and more patrons seem to be following this yellow brick road. Just be sure to tip at a higher % of the bill.
