Splitting entrees

I know it's been discussed here before about splitting entrees, but I have a few observations and questions. We are not on a dining plan. And I fully expect to snack in between meals. So a few restaurants (The Wave, BOG, Sci-Fi, and then probably some QS too) my husband and I are planning to split an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. To save money and save our stomachs. But I rarely see people review and show that they split the entrée. So does the kitchen split out the entrée for you, or do they just bring you an extra plate and let you do the splitting? Or are you sharing from one entrée plate? I know appetizers and desserts and usually shared from one plate. Maybe people just don't take a picture of the split plate.

I definitely would prefer to try my own entrée, but I think we'll still be satisfied to just share. And if we are still hungry we can get some snacks along the way. There may be some entrees that seem a little small to split, but I think we are going to do that anyway. I hope we won't feel like we are being impolite.

At most restaurants, the kitchen will do the split for you. Some will bring you an extra plate. I have never had to share from one plate & I have split entrees at many, many places.

We have had varying results. Sometimes our shared entree will come beautifully prepared on two separate plates; sometimes one plate and the server brings an extra plate and sometimes we have to ask for an extra plate (which always astounds me). We have had it happen different ways at the same restaurant even. One reason we often share is that we both like beef, but an 8 ounce fillet is just too much.

I've had varying results as well. Some places split the meal in the kitchen and bring it out on two plates, others have brought the entree and an extra plate to the table. It's depends (I think) on the chefs because I've had both happen at the same restaurant (different days). Personally, I think if it's something that easy to split, they're more likely to split it in the back, but if it's something that cannot be easily split, then they won't.

In terms of the QS, those I've not had come pre-split from the back. They've come like normal and we had to ask for a second plate or just share one plate.

Different places do it different ways and the same place may do it differently on different visits. Just let the server know you will be splitting an entree and take it from there. My wife and I do it all the time.

We usually opt for two apps, one salad and an entree.

One word of caution since the OP said she and her husband wanted to save their stomachs. What my husband and I found out from the places we've shared is that while the entrée is cut in two, the sides usually aren't. So, if you are sharing a burger and fries, you'll each get half the burger but more than likely, a full side of fries.

When we go to the 50s Prime Time Diner, my sister and I always split the fried chicken. They always bring out the full plate and then an empty plate and we do the splitting at the table. Splitting is a great way to go for smaller appetites.

This! This is why IMO we should simply ask for an extra plate and split it ourselves, it's not right to get extra sides without paying for them, and yeah/sometimes the restaurant just does it-but in the long run that leads to higher costs for the restaurant-which leads to higher prices for us. I personally do like to share entrees with my daughter, and I do not want not expect extra sides because I choose to split. This is just my opinion on the matter, I always just ask for an extra plate please-because my daughter eats like 4-5 bites only-ever.

This is what we do, too. We can try more options this way and I have found that I enjoy the apps more than the entrees in many WDW restaurants.

Often but not always, 2 apps are less expensive than 1 entree.
