Split stay questions

We're planning a 9 day/ 8 night trip the third week in August. We're currently booked for the All Star Sports. I'm thinking of splurging and seeing if we could stay at the Contemporary the last three nights. I thought we would spend the first few days at Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Save the last 3/4 days for MK and Epcot. Wouldn't it just be so convenient to be on the monorail?

What can you tell me about split stays? We will not have a car. How does our luggage get transfered? We're planning to go to the parks each day. Do we just pack up our luggage in the morning and then magically find it at the new hotel later in the day? Please give me any info that you can. Is it too much of a hassle to do a split stay? What if we want to come back to our hotel at 1:00. Will our new room be ready?
