I'm already planning for a vacation in May 2010 (18-28, which is a Tuesday through the following Friday). Our thought right now is to stay at CSR for the first part of our trip (Tuesday through Saturday night), then rent points for a stay at BWV from the Sunday until Friday when we leave. I really like the idea of having some time at an Epcot resort, because that will make getting back after Illuminations and Fantasmic easier--we can just walk. Point rental is so much cheaper than staying at the resort that it seems like a no-brainer (if, of course, the place I want is available, which I won't know for a while)
I just wonder, though, if this kind of a split will be a real hassle. I haven't read about anyone splitting their stay between a regular resort and a DVC rental, and so I wonder if anyone has done it, and if so, how it worked?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried this.
Thanks.

I would consider it being a hassle since I usually pack for 2 weeks and a split stay to have to pack all that luggage back into its luggage carrier is a hassle. I know Disney will transfer your luggage but still it is a great hassle. It also depends how many nights you plan on spending at both resorts.

Wow, you are a planner! May 2010 is along ways away!

The thing with renting points is that it involves acertain amount of trust on both your part and the person you are renting from. For my own sake, that's not a risk I want to take when it comes to my vacation, and the amount of moeny that goes in to my vacataion. If you are comfortable with that kind of risk, then yes, you can save money.

From mousesavers.com:
"Renting points means you pay the DVC member directly (often by giving him a one-night deposit up front and paying the balance 30 days before the trip, though arrangements vary widely) and he makes a reservation in your name. The transaction requires trust on both sides.

I [ Mousavers' writer, Mary] have rented points on four occasions and in each case had no problems at all. In fact, for years I had never heard of anyone being ripped off in a DVC rental situation, but in 2006 I heard of some instances in which renters were the victims of fraud."

I suggest you read more on this subject using that site before you invest.

AS for splitting your stay, I have done that a number of times. My typical split is part offsite/part onsite. I do this when I want to visit the other Orlando. Last fall, we had an eight night stay booked at Pop, but I looked into airfare and an extra day early was so much less that it covered the cost of an extra night! Not only an extra night, but an extra night at AKL concierge level!! :thumbsup2 Our package didn't start until the next day, so we consigned ourselves to a non-park day at teh beautiful resort. Another time we did a split between two rooms at AKL and two offsite condos (large group).

Okay, to finally address our inquiry (sorry for being so long winded).

The pluses are: first, gettingto enjoy two resorts.

The second plus, if you will, is saving money. Splitting a stay where one resort is expensive allows youto enjoy the amenities of that resort, without having to pay the extra for your entire tirp. The only way AKL concierge was worthwhile, IMO, was because we were able to take advanatage of teh reosrt lounge. Most of the rest of the trip - at Pop - we hardly saw the resort at all. WE are mostly in thepark people. I like Pop's food court and transportation. AKL's pool though is WAY better (ThoughI also like AKL's transport.) The pool at Pop is nothing special to me. AS you pointed out, the Epcot location is a big plus....but the price is abig deterrent to staying there the whole time.

Another hidden plus of one night concierge was the complete itinerary they printed up for us - covered our entire stay! That was kind of cool!

On your transfer day, you can have a somewhat relaxed breakfast, since you aren't rushing off to a park - but see below. You can also use this as a chance to do something offsite - like eating lunch.

Another plus, if one stay is offsite, is that it makes seeing theother Orlando really easy and mentally better. Once you are on WDW property,it is hard to leave. I somehow don't mind losing vacation time to hit a grocery store when I'm offsite, but onsite, I really try to maximize my park time. I want all my waking energy directed at having fun!

The disadvantages of a split stay. Once you've been to each resort, then there will be nothing new to see. I love seeing a WDW resort for the first time. If you've not seen either place before, then a single stay is better.

Second, you do lose half a day. You have to pack up the first room, unpack twice, check-in. That's half a day you can't be inthe parks having fun.

Third, you double your risk of losing something important along the way - like forgetting that all important ADR list. Though many Disney folks are really great about helping out.

Fourth, your room may not be available until after three - either room. So if the kids need an afternoon nap, you may be out of luck. Usually not aproblem for us, but it could be for some folks. Ther's also a good chance one or both rooms WILL be available before three. Disney will transfer your luggage, but if you leave something important in a bag by accidentt, it may be several hours until you can get to it. So while not overwhelming, there is a tiny bit of stress involved.

Now my tips section ofhte post:

Transfers are easier if you have acar. Then you can plunk everything in the car, check in to the new resort at your own pace. Just don't leave anything perishable ina car in florida. May will already be plenty warm.

To emphasize teh above - chocolate souvenieers left in luggage in the trunk of a car in Orlando will melt! Those expensive little Mickeys you paid so much for will be brown mush! Who wants to drink milk that's been in the car for five hours? :crazy2: Really you can only transfer non-perishable groceries, unless you maybe have a cooler, and I don't want to be bothered will all that.

Pack your luggage so that you have a daybag for the short stay. If it's on the front end, pakc a one night bag. If it's onthe tail end, pack so that you don't have to venture into the laundry suitcase. Your final packing (or first unpackign) will be much faster than if you spend a full week in one place gathering stuff.

Another time we did a split, we stayed in a condo the first part. WE bought all kinds of groceries for nine people. WE still had aton of food when we transferred. It was crazy. I should just realize now, I don't realy eat in room food whe Igo to FLorida. Maybe some folks do, but I don't. I like a dorm frdige so I can have coffe with milk, maybe orange juice....but there's no way I'm going to eat lunch in the room, or eat a brown-bag lunch while I'm in the park. Buy groceries very sparingly. The big disadvantage of Walmart, IMO is they mostly sell onlylarge boxes of stuff. I can't eat a whole box of cereal in just a few days.

I could give you more, but that's the gist of it! I will say I have done it a number of times all for very good reasons, and it can be worthwhile. I love AKL, but usually can't afford to stay there the entire time, and I woudn't take advantage of the resort's amenities if I did. The one time I stayed there for four nights I felt slightly guilty, since I wasn't there all that much to appreciate it. That said, my next stay will be at CR. Wish me luck!

I do it most every trip. With weekend points being high (and me forever being short on points) we almost always have a few days at a value or mod before our DVC. In June we have 9 nights at ASMU and then 7 nights at Old Key West. Out of about 8 DVC stays now, there has only been one time when I stayed at my DVC the whole time. And even that time, I split between two DVC's doing a studio in one for two nights then switching to a one bedroom at another resort for a week. My brother thinks I am insane to do this, but points can be tricky to work out and frankly, my resort is as much a part of my vacation as the parks. I do lots of different parks, so why not mix things up on the resort end as well!

The pros are that you get to experience different resorts. Each WDW resort is unique.

What I like about splitting between a value/mod and a DVC is that the mods and values have the food courts (love those) and some sort of fun theming. We tend to do the parks a bit more during that part of our stay, enjoy what the resort has to offer and then when we move over to our DVC, enjoy our larger room/unit, the balcony, the full service restaurant and the theming of that resort.

Many people split with a deluxe and value as a way to afford the deluxe. Their total stay might balance out to about what a moderate would cost but they get to experience a higher end resort and those amenities in a way they can afford.

The hassle of course is the move itself. However, Disney will gladly transfer your luggage for you, or you can take a cab. I usually cab it. If you have a car, its a piece of cake. You have to unpack and pack up twice but to me, if you are organized its no biggie. I generally have a few things I don't even unpack at the first resort, especially if its just for a night or two.

I once went from Pop, to Boardwalk Villas, and then to All Star Music. It was sort of fun. I thought switching over to Music would be a bummer but we loved that resort and my kids are always happy to try out a new place. For us it works. Probably some people feel different.

First off :welcome:

Second, doing a split stay can be done and can be rewarding. The pp said a lot, and also pretty much said it all. I have done a split stay between a DVC resort on points rental and then followed that up with two more regular resorts. I went from AKV to POP to POFQ. I do not recommend moving three times! Two was more than doable.

I did have my own car, so moving things from point A to point B was a lot easier. I also did not have a lot of perishables to move either since the resort was POP and I knew we would not have a fridge in the room. I did bring a good cooler with ice, since I knew we would probably not get into the room right away.

I also had a bag packed with the stuff we would need while waiting for the room, which turned out to be unnecessary. Since I was flexible with my location at the resorts, I just asked for an available room and we were able to get in right away. That hardly ever happens BTW.

The downside is moving from location to location, the upside is that you get to try two resorts in one trip, and get a better idea of where you would like to stay on future trips.

Good luck with your future planning! :goodvibes

I have both rented points and had split stays. I would do both in a heart beat again. We didn't lose half a day at all in switching resorts. We packed up the night before for the most part and in the morning we tool a 10 minute taxi ride and pre-checked into the next resort, put our bags at bell services and hopped a bus to the park. Before heading back to the resort we'd phone to make sure we had a room number. Easy!
The advantage is that we could ease the budget and still enjoy a deluxe resort. For us, we'd rather have a longer stay but can't afford the deluxe the entire stay. We also enjoy trying out all of the resorts. I only have 2 left that we haven't stayed at and those are the most expensive that I can't rationalize spending (yet!) the GF and the Poly. Instead we go more often, and spend less each visit. Sure, maybe we could stay deluxe if we only went to WDW once a year or every other year....but that's not going to happen for us.
Switching resorts is easy IMO!! Have fun!:beach: pixiedust:

We did a split stay last Feb. I wanted so badly to stay at the Wilderness Lodge, and I could get 3 nights at the Dolphin for $60/night. So we booked 5 nights at the Lodge and then switched to the Dolphin for 3 nights.

It worked out just great. Part of the reason why, is we are not the type of people to unpack and spread out our stuff all over, so packing for the switch meant just tossing a few items back in our bags and zipping up! If you like to unpack everything, you may have a harder time making a switch.

We just called down at the Lodge, they came up and tagged all of our bags. We had our own car and drove over to the Dolphin and spent maybe 10 minutes checking in, and we loved spending the next 3 days focused on Epcot and the Studios, just walking back to the Dolphin or taking the boat.

DH and I have done many split stays, usually 3 to 5 nights at one place and 3 to 5 nights at another. It is easy for us since we have our car with us and it is just the two of us. It is like having 2 vacations in one.

That being said I asked DH not to do another split stay for our Oct trip, I just wanted to stay at one place for the entire time and not have to pack up, check out, drive to a new resort, check in, unpack....you see where I am going with this.... BUT we decided to add a few more days so we are going to do 3 nights POP and 7 nights BC......So I guess I will do another split stay if it means adding on more time!
