Splenda- is it really all that splendid?

Hey everyone! I've found this new kind of flavored water that I absolutely love and have been drinking it a LOT lately with my new eating habits. However, today I noticed the little Splenda logo on the bottle. I know artificial sweeteners aren't really all that good for you, so I went to google to do a search. The Splenda site says that everything is good, but other sites are saying that it's really bad for you. I know, I know, everything in moderation, but what exactly is moderation? I've been drinking about 2-3 18 ounce bottles of the stuff per day. Anyone have any further input about Splenda?? Thanks :teeth:

I always thought it was supposed to be okay. Not "good for you," exactly, but not "bad for you" (like aspertame) either. :confused3

well, We love Splenda. It does not have the after taste of lots of other sweeteners. Some people say they get headaches from it though, I think. You can bake with it too, which you can't do with other sweeteners (its heat stable) My family actually searches out for products made with it. (fruit2O, Pepsi One, Diet Rite are some of out favorites)

SPLENDA is made from sugar molecules. I think that they enlarge them so that they aren't absorbed. I usually don't buy products with it because I think that they over sweeten them. I would buy it separately and add it as sugar except I don't use sugar at home except for Christmas baking.

We like the Splenda... except for baking...

That's what I was worried about, the whole aspertame thing. I know my BF's mother swears by Splenda, but I was just concerned. Hey, I'm sure it's better than all that sugar in regular stuff, right? ;)

I thought I had read that Splenda was chlorinated sugar? :confused3

If we go back to the "all things in moderation" then sugar is your best bet, IMO. Stripping a sugar molecule of a few atoms and adding chlorine doesn't strike me as a wise plan. Just my opinion.

Pepsi One is not just Splenda at least not where I am. It is a mix of Splenda and Nitrasweet. No way can I have it. I am waiting for Coke to come out with its Diet Coke with Splenda

I won't use anything but Splenda for drinks. I hate the "pink" stuff, and tolerate the "Blue" stuff. Give me my "yellow"!

I agree Papa Deuce. Yellow pack for me also. Can't stand the pink pack and allergic to the blue stuff. And being diabetic sugar isn't a good choice

I've been using Splenda in my coffee (only - NEVER in baking) for YEARS now.

However - splenda in a Dunkin Donuts coffee doesn't taste the same...I still get Equal there! heheh

Yes, there is controversy for other sugar substitutes, too, but Splenda is still manufactured sugar. It's unnatural and man-made and anything like that can create havoc to the body. Perhaps not immediately, though.

I would rather have the real thing than eat artificial sweetener. Of course, other alternatives are fructose or stevia.

A few here have said that the "never cook with splenda" in a way that indicates that you tried it and it didn't turn out so good. Is it that bad in baking?

I tried to make this chocolate cookie recipe using Splenda. It called for Hershey's Baking Cocoa and Sugar. I substituted Splenda and it was so bad and bitter. Very bad.
I also tried to make rice pudding using Splenda. I thought it would work since no cocoa is in rice pudding, but it was awful, too.
On the other hand, I made a pumpkin pie with Splenda and a rhubarb crisp with Splenda and both turned out nice.

I don't care if it's ok for you or not- it will always taste nasty to me. Give me the pink or the blue any day!

OK, is anyone participating here a Registered Dietician (not just a nutritionist -a world of difference between the two)? My daughter is an RD (requires 4 yrs, heavy in the sciences plus 1 year hospital internship plus certificatin exam) and she uses Splenda over Equal, Sacchrine(sic) or Sugar(even brown). So I believe it is safe for use.

According to her worry more about 'hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated' vegetable oils as contains Trans Fatty Acids which is 'bad' for your cholestral control.
