Is Splenda an option at the restaurants for a sweetener or do I need to bring my own?

You have to bring your own. I always have Splenda packets in my bag at WDW!

It varied from restaurant to restaurant, but I think we only saw it twice. Bring your own.

What is splenda made from?

Splenda is a brand name for sucralose. It is made from sugar. However, it has no caloric content and does not raise blood sugar so is good for diabetics and those following a controlled carb diet. Taste is exactly like "real" sugar - no aftertaste at all.

Ya, it's much tastier IMO than Sweet N Low or Equal.

On my last trip to WDW I don't remember seeing it, best bet is to carry them with you.

Just an aside, in my area, Dunkin Donuts now has it, but you usually have to ask for it when getting a coffee. Starbucks has it as well, but they leave it out on the counter.

I am a nursing mom and I use it all the time - I love it.

My dietician recommended it to me when I was pregnant because I had gestational diabetes. She told me not to use Sweet N Low.

I use Splenda all the time at home...but when I'm out I'll use Equal if in a pinch. (that pink stuff is just NASTY!)

Even around here - I've seen VERY few places offering Splenda...and I honestly don't recall seeing any places in WDW that did.

Can kids/lactating mothers/pregnant women eat it?
That's up for debate. Some doctors say yes, others say no. Since it hasn't been around long, not much is known about its long-term effects.

As a pregnant and nursing mom with a 15 month old, I can tell you that we don't use it. I don't have a problem with limited amounts of sugar, and I don't feel the possible risk of Splenda is worth it. If we had diabetes or something that made sugar a problem, I might reconsider.

Splenda is a lot more expensive than Sweet n' low, so I don't know if we'll see it offered as much. I plan on bringing my own, as well as my own decaf tea.

You can buy the Splenda in the little packages now so it's so easy to stick in your bag. We never use sugar anymore. We are big fans of it.

Jordans' mom

My husband is diabetic and uses Splenda. When we had dinner at Boma he had a long discussion with a very nice chef about Splenda. The chef wasn't familiar with it, but took several packets to try. He said he would do some reading on it.

Splenda is AWESOME!

I despise aspartame and all the other old artificial sweeteners, but to me Splenda tastes almost the same as regular sugar!

That being said, I use it in moderation and don't let my kids eat a whole lot of it as it almost seems too good to be true (I'm thinking that 5 years from now someone will "discover" that Splenda causes some terrible health problem :( )

I will keep an eye out for Splenda and Splenda-sweetened products on our next WDW trip.

I hate other artificial sweetners, so I tried Splenda. I loved the taste and the flexibility of cooking with it. But after about 3 weeks of regular use (in my tea & in nightly desserts,) I became ill. My resting pluse dropped from my usual 80s to 42 and I felt exhausted all the time. My primary care physician thought something serious was wrong with me, so he referred me to a cardiologist & a pulmonary specialist. After a thalium stress test and 24 hours on a halter monitor, as well as a VQ lung scan, the doctors were stumped. Meanwhile, since I was sick, I was not cooking with (or eating) Splenda. Within about a week, I was back to "normal."

I contacted Splenda just to let them know about my experience and was put in touch with their medical department. I called for 3 days before I finally got through. I was always on hold for a LONG time, so maybe other people have had some health related problems as a result of using Splenda. Splenda was very nice and offered to send me a refund for the amount I paid for their product.

I now avoid Splenda, much like people with wheat or nut allergies avoid those products. But I am concerned about the fact this product is being used in foods marketed to children. I hope more research will be done. I know it's made from sugar, but by swapping three chlorine molecules for three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule, it really does change it's form. I mean think of the difference between H2O (water) and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide.)
