Opened in 1992, Splash Mountain is arguably one of the best Disney attractions ever built.
It is not only a long ride, lasting about 15 minutes, but it also does what Disney is famous for, tells a good story. As you ride along, you are in the middle of the story of Brer Rabbit, who wants to leave his home in search of adventure, but at the same time has to avoid being caught by Brer Bear and Brer Fox, who want to make him their dinner. The rabbit outsmarts his foes several times during the ride, but eventually he is captured and begs not to be thrown into the briar patch. Of coarse, he gets thrown in there, which to us is a stomach-loosing 52 foot plunge down the mountain! This ride was an instant classic and still draws huge crowds for good reason.
Splash Moutain was inspired by the 1946 movie "Song of the South", which is currently banned in the U.S. due to its slavery issues. One of Disney's more popular songs, "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah", was in the movie and is heard throughout the ride as well.
So LONG!!
YAY! Brer Rabbit returned home!! WELCOME HOME!
