was reading up on it today, on some disney site. heard that it will be closed for all the febuary, anyone know exactly what they are doing to it?. it's one of our family faves, and we don't want it spoilet. lol!

I'm assumimg just normal upkeep- not changing anything. Splash was closed for the month of January this year, and they just did general cleaning, etc.

The upcoming "confirmed" rehab of WDW's Space Mountain may be more than just lighting, sound system & train replacements. I am hearing that the mountain, possibly from space, may be out of service for 12-18 months. Is it possible that we'll see a completely new track like the California "rebuild"? Well, I won't give you my opinion, but I sence that there will be many arguments over the "original" or "2.0" versions. Whatever they do, I hope it's an improvement to an already terrific ride.

Disney has already signed some contact with with Vekoma to perform some kind of upgrade to Space Mountain starting sometime in 2008. Right now it seems there is much discussion about how far to take it with one side pushing for a complete overhaul of the existing layout and new trains that will feature an audio system, while others are still pushing for the more costly complete ride system replacement as was done at Disneyland. Obviously the cost of a complete replacement is much higher than a general overhaul with only partial replacement where needed so they have to decide what the ROI (return on investment) will be to warrant the more costly option. Either way however, they want new trains with an audio system, so at least that is in the pipe, however don’t expect any major upgrades to the queue area.

ah, i knew nothing about space...when does the refurb start?

I wish Disney would leave Space Mountain alone and instead take all of that money and go right over to Disney/MGM and use it to replace that god forsaken "Sounds Dangerous" thing with Drew Carey. That thing is terrible.:confused3

eventhough this thread is about splash mountain, which goes down for a month almost every yeear to clean and change out water and such... Space Mountain is in need of major work. It's getting to the point of becoming a safety issue. the ride hasn't been seriously rehabbed (SP) since the early 90s and the track is in serious need of replacement.

Just curious, what do you base your statement on? I have am interested in knowing why you thing it is becoming a safety issue.
