Spirit or Delta?

My DS (18) and I are meeting up at Disney on December 16th once his exams are done. I am flying in from Ottawa and land around 9:45 am. He'll be at school in Windsor so will cross over to Detroit and catch a flight from there. The only two direct flights coming in relatively close to mine are one from Delta and the other from Spirit (which I had never heard of before...). He won't have any checked baggage, just a carry on and a personal item (small backpack).

Spirit is cheaper even with all the add on fees.

Has anyone flown with them and how did it go? Or am I better off with Delta even with the $100 difference?

Spirit is terrible. The extra cost for Delta is worth it for no (or less) headaches.

We've had numerous flight problems with Spirit, and DH has refused to fly it anymore. We flew Delta this summer and it was such a better experience.

Delta, if the price difference was 300 I would say suck it up with spirit this once, but for 100 and hopefully less if you can get a better deal go Delta

In this particular case I would only consider using Delta because you have a MUCH better chance of him getting there should something unexpected happen with the flight. Events of the last week notwithstanding, Delta has a lot more options when recovering from IRROPS (irregular operations) like plane mechanical issues, weather, crew timing, etc. out than Spirit does. Spirit doesn't typically fly their routes 7 days/week, it's more typically a couple times a week so when there's a problem with your flight, you're likely stuck several days until their next one goes.

If that happened with Spirit it would take a month to get back to normal since they have so relatively few flights.

We flew on the Monday and ultimately we left maybe 5 hours after our original flight was scheduled.

That's not bad.

Wow! I must have been really lucky with Spirit! I have flown Spirit so many times, and have never had an issue. I prefer to fly with them when I go to wdw solo, since it is a quick flight and gets me from A to B for cheap. My only complaint is how small the cabin of the planes feel and that is why I would only fly them solo and not with kids. There is more room on other airlines. I am looking at a solo trip in Feb and I can book my airfare now with Spirit for $50 each way, so for me it is a no brainer. Go with what you feel might be best. I have never experienced any delays/cancellations. I always take the first morning flight out, so maybe that's why. They fly out of our smaller airport in Atlantic City, which I like more than Philly because it is less busy and so much smaller.

I have never flown Delta, so I can't comment on that. We prefer Southwest over everything really.

Avoid spirit!! Unless the flight is under 2 hours. Spirit has Worst customer service ever. No leg room and planes are disgustingly dirty.

Well if you haven't gotten the hint already, stay far far away from Spirit! Their flights are delayed by hours on a regular basis, horrible service, and they nickel and dime you for every single thing.

We flew spirit from Detroit to vegas last July and while we might have lucked out, it was fine. I honestly couldn't have told the difference between that and an Airtran flight. We will be flying with them again in a few weeks from Detroit to Orlando just because I couldn't pass up the deal (for 3 flights I probably saved about 500-600). Hopefully things go just as smoothly. I also notice that from Detroit, they are running multiple flights a day, 7 days a week. We are only the second flight of the day so hopefully that helps us.

People love Spirit. Until they screw up and they discovered the CEO meant it when he said they don't do customer service.


I just don't go if they are my only option
