(Spinoff poll) Do you enjoy colouring books?

Just thought this would be an interesting poll.

I do enjoy colouring, but I have a sneaking suspicion that may be because colouring books were forbidden to me when I was a child.

You see, my mum believed that colouring books stunted creative growth in children. She wanted me to be free to develop my own artistic sensibility without being constrained by society's dictates.

She was really strict about it, too. When one of the nuns at my school gave me a colouring book (because I'd told her I had none), she made me give it right back. And then she filled them all in on her theory about the negative impact colouring would have on me (I still have the letter she wrote, tucked away somewhere).

I can only imagine what the nuns thought of this.

Anyway, I'm sure part of the reason I'm enjoying this latest fad so much, is because I never got to do it when I was a kid.

But I'd still love to know who else colours!

I don't, but they certainly have some beautiful looking books out there. I was just shopping for them last week to take to a friend who has been suddenly hospitalized because I thought it was a way to busy herself and occupy her mind.

It's not my thing, but my daughter loves to color, and I bought some books and a big tin of colored pencils last week for our Yankee Swap.

I've always liked to color.......and do when I have time.
But that is rare these days. I do take a book and pencils on vacations with me

I can't draw so I love to colour but even at 27 I struggle to stay between the lines hahaha

I may not color actual coloring books, but I am often drawing and coloring on my iPad.

I don't do coloring books, but I recently got into pottery and I love both making pieces and painting/glazing them.

Yep. Long before the trend, when DH, about 25 years ago, the first summer that DH and I were dating, we flew out to visit his sisters in California and he was surpried when I pulled out a coloring book and new box of crayons on the plane.
I still color on planes--and try to make time to do so if i am feeling overhwelmed in general.
I will say that while I enjoy the fancy adult coloring books and have several--- I sort of miss the simpler ones aimed at kids and will likely pick up some of htose to replace the adult ones once they fill up

I had a few colouring books as a child. I coloured a bit and it was okay. But I can't stand colouring now. It makes my hand tired and it feels like a complete waste of time.

I was coloring last night. Treated myself to a Christmas themed Adult Color Book. My wrist was sore this morning so I came to the conclusion I need to do it more! I have the 132 Count Prismacolor Pencil set in my wishlist on Amazon. Right now I have the 48 set but seriously considered sneaking into DD's room to grab her 72 set last night.

I chose "occasionally" not because I don't enjoy it but because I enjoy it too much. I get wrapped up in what I'm doing and then I'm up way too late coloring. While it's on trend right now I don't think it's something that ever really went away. I have some of the mandala color books from the seventies my Uncle gave me. For awhile you could find reproductions of them at Michael's and Dick Blick. And remember the poster/marker sets in the 80s? Oh and color/paint by number.

I keep looking at that Dr. Suess one and have the Disney Thomas Kincade one on my wishlist.

Was never really my thing. Somewhere around 3rd grade a couple older boys gave me some drawing tips that improved my freehand pictures a lot & I drew a LOT with a pencil for many years. Pretty much just cars & trucks though LOL

I haven't done the adult coloring book thing yet, but I have used regular coloring books in my adult life. As far as the adult coloring book craze, I definitely have no problem with it, but haven't had an interest in it myself because I do lots of other arts and crafts projects, so haven't felt the need to spend time coloring.

Magpie, the story about your mom reminded me of an opposite experience I had in sixth grade. My sixth grade teacher was a big MATH guy, but since some sort of art instruction was required, one day he gave us printouts of this intricate geometric coloring page that we were supposed to spend the period coloring. I loved to draw when I was younger and had been working on this crazy drawing of what it would be like if I lived in the rainforest and had this big fancy treehouse and all of the exotic rainforest pets I would have. Anyway, I felt this was a better use of my time during 'art' class. My teacher saw me and wasn't too pleased.

Teacher: "What are you doing?"

Me: "Drawing."

Teacher: "Well put it away, you're supposed to be coloring that page. This is art class."
