Spinoff: Pineapple on a Pizza?

There are claims that the idea came from a Canadian restaurant. The alleged restaurant sounded interesting. The owner was from Greece. He hired a Chinese chef to cook Chinese food, had Greek items, and got interested in pizza and had to experiment because nobody had any expertise.

I suppose everyone has a different name. Americans call it "Canadian bacon", but in Canada I found it was called "back bacon". I was at a Tim Hortons, which had a "Canadian back bacon" egg sandwich as a new menu item. With an English muffin, it was almost like an Egg McMuffin.

Tim's New Steak And Swiss Is TO DIE FOR! For the first time I don't care if I get there after they stop serving breakfast.

Back to what they call the stuff in Hawaii.....

I found that "Hawaiian" on a menu in Honolulu often was one combination (or perhaps a category) that often included Kalua pork, Portuguese sausage, and whatever else they wanted. I did see pineapple, but it wasn't the pineapple and ham we think of. I noted the one place that called ham and pineapple pizza a "haole" (and noted that mainlanders would call it a "Hawaiian", but I found one place that just lists it as "ham & pineapple" without any sort of editorial.

I am ADAMANTLY against anything that involves pineapple and tomato sauce in the same recipe. Gross! No matter how many people rave about it, I'll never understand.

I agree- I love pineapple as a fruit--- but on Pizza-GROSS!

A lot of things are considered gross as a cultural construct. For example, there was that broccoli pizza from Inside Out. Apparently that wouldn't fly in Japan and they changed it to green bell peppers.

A place near where I live specialized in a spinach and mushroom pizza. I know it might sound kind of gross but it's amazing.

That's just it - I HAVE tried it. Blech!!

Same. I tried pineapple on pizza at the urging of friends who like it. YUCK!!! One person took it kind of personally. Oh well.

Not a fan of pineapple in general. I'll eat it if it's in a fruit cup or similar, but I'd rather do without.

I fail to see how anyone could ever consider that gross.

Just like I fail to see how anyone can consider pineapple on pizza NOT gross. :teeth:

I agree. Mushrooms and spinach "match" with bread, tomato sauce, Italian spices, and cheese. To me, adding pineapple sounds like someone mixed up the recipe like Rachael on Friends making a trifle.

I am curious if those who think it is " gross"do you eat pineapple with ham? Is it the sauce with it that turns you off?

I just never have heard so many people think it was weird maybe since it is more comman here. Btw, I never knew it was Canadian before.

It's common here too. Ham works with pineapple IMO, tomato sauce and Italian spices does not.

I love fresh pineapple, but by its self, the way it was meant to be eaten. If it's on pizza I'll pass and eat something else and I love pizza.

Anger from inside out:
Congratulations San Fransico, you've ruin pizza. First the Hawaiians and now you!

Not a huge pineapple fan to begin with, but no I do not eat it with ham (nor with pork in Mexican dishes).

Could live on Pineapple, but no way ever on a pizza. It's not even a listed topping on my regular pizza place. We're purists when it comes to pizza topping.

It's amazing grilled with shrimp and a given whenever make pulled chicken in my slow cooker.

The 2 local places we will order a Hawaiian pizza from don't use the standard pizza sauce. It's a BBQ sauce and once you add in the ham, onion, and pineapple, it's quite yummy. And this is coming from the girl who eats only grilled pineapple or a few in a greek salad.

I loooove pineapple on my pizza. Pineapple, ham, and bacon is my preferred pizza choice. It's not fresh pineapple, though... it's usually the canned stuff.

I'm not certain why some think it's gross, but then I come from the land of poutine, so I guess as a rule, Canadians eat weird things. ;)

After a while, when unusual or esoteric sauces or toppings are used it ceases to be pizza IMO.

Squid Ink

Sliced Potatoes

Corn

Whatever this monstrosity is supposed to be.

Maybe the above examples are very tasty, but they're not pizza.

They're an entirely different type of food. All together.
