Spinoff Nerf Guns and Barbies????

I could understand not having nerf guns in the house, but why would you ban barbie????:confused3

I can answer that, I think. Way back in the 60s *I* was not allowed to have a Barbie and I really wanted one! My (very conservative and religious) parents thought she was pornographic and that her clothes were way too revealing. I can't imagine what my father would have thought of Bratz!

After endless pleading I was allowed to have Skipper in 1965 on the grounds that her shape was more realistic. However, I had to make Skipper's clothes myself because the outfits sold for her were too risque. I learned to sew on Skipper. As an adult, I do agree with my parents Barbie's figure is - shall we say - exaggerated, but I thought, and still think, they were making a big deal out of nothing.

We didn't ban any toy but we did discuss toy choices with our kids. We didn't like war toys or guns in the house, and told them so. But we knew the toys would be played with at their friend's houses anyway, and forbidding them would just make them more attractive. So they were allowed some toy guns, etc, as gifts or brought with their allowances, but we would not purchase them.

I don't have a ban on either, but we don't have Nerf guns because my son never wanted them. He prefers games where you can catch/throw/run with a ball. We have a few Barbies that we received as gifts, but my daughter doesn't play with them. She prefers her baby dolls.

I did my best to avoid Barney and Bratz dolls, however. ;)

I thought about banning both but allowed them in the end since the toys weren't the problem, attitudes about them are. So I bought toy guns and Barbies & worked on how my kids would process them instead.

no guns of any kind, my poor kid has never had a squirt gun but we found some squirt sticks at the dollar store and she was in heaven!

I played with Barbies, still have my originals so my DD had a plethora of them but she never cared!

I drew the line at Bratz, Barbies slutty cousin, not sure if they make them any more. My chid didn't play with those and I refused to let her have anything to do with Barney, no toys, no videos. That was Mommy's little gift to Mommy!

Having two sons and a daughter, we have had every play weapon ever created but only a few Barbies. My dd has never really had an interest in Barbies... Polly Pockets were her thing. I have a friend who has 4 girls, and she always found it hilarious that we had "weapon bins". I am a neat freak and needed to keep them organized too. :lmao: Her daughters were not allowed to have weapons or Barbies in their home, but they were allowed to play with them while at my house. Eventually, she did allow them to have Nerf guns.

With two boys and two girls we had tons of nerf guns and Barbies (and related accesssories). A lot of games involved both the nerf guns and the Barbies.

We also had all kinds of other toy guns, swords, knives and dolls. So far all of my children have survived (17, 19, 22 and 26).

Barbie would group up with the My Little Ponies, He-Man, and She-ra to fight the evil Skeletor, his minions, and the dinosaurs!

It's amazing the stories I used to come up with back then.

We allow both. :thumbsup2

DD use to love Barbies and still has them all.

DS has an arsenal of toy weapons, nerf guns, lazers, swords, knives, light sabers etc.....

We also have a few airsoft and BB guns.

We had both Nerf guns (and other kinds of guns) as well as Barbies. Our kids knew the difference between real and make-believe and we don't believe in making rules just to make rules and to impress our friends.

Our cat likes to play fetch with the Nerf darts. We play in the garage because it's 40' wide and he can really stretch his legs!

as a kid in the 70s, my mom would not allow us to have barbies. she did not like barbie at all. nothing to do with pornographic shape or clothes, but she didn't like that barbie was an adult, felt it was better for us to play with baby dolls. I didn't get it then, and honestly I don't really get it now, but she felt very very very strongly about it. my dd7 has no interest in barbies other than her disney princess ones, but I would have allowed them if she did want one. my sisters each allowed their dds to have them, too.

my kids are all allowed nerf guns and water guns and we all have a lot of fun with them! not a fan of any realistic looking gun, but i have no issues with brightly colored play guns like this. I do remember debating it a bit with other moms when our kids were young and just starting to have interest and we were all on the fence for a bit about it, but honestly we all ended up having so much fun with them, adults and kids alike.

I think my son has every Nerf gun ever made. We allow them in the house (as long as they're not annoying us when we're trying to do something). We've never had anything knocked over or broken by a nerf bullet.

Then again, the bullets don't get used all the time here. Most of the time the gun's have imaginary bullets that are shooting zombies.

Ooh, one of my favorite things to do was design barbie clothes! Unmatched kids socks made perfect dresses, halters, and skirts for Babs.

The only thing we ever banned were Brat dolls. My girls still managed to get a few mini versions from Mc D's. And boy, they were prized possessions, I was not about to pry them from their little hands...

DS9 has a bunch of nerf guns in an array of sizes, he also has an electronic nerf "dart" board thing that he can shoot the guns at and score points. We allow the nerf guns in the house, the only rule we have is no shooting in the face.
DD14 has a bunch of old Barbies and Bratz dolls in a rubbermaid container in her closet (she doesn't want to get rid of them just yet but, doesn't want anyone to know that she has them).

DS9 sometimes takes DD's old Barbies and lines them up on his air hockey table and tries to knock them over by shooting at them with the nerf guns.

I didn't allow guns until my son was about 5. I wanted to make sure he GOT the difference, toys versus real weapons. Also, there was soooo much imaginary play to be had before he needed realistic toys. We have nerf guns and violent video games now but the boys are teens. I am beginning to hate those projectiles from the nerf guns as they are all over my house and my yard from 'Nerf Wars.'

:rotfl2::thumbsup2 I was reading this and thinking about my poor Barbies....we didn't even bother with the Nerf guns. My brother & I popped all their heads off, which was fine until we went to try and put them back on. The only one that we KNEW was correct was Ken....yes we popped his head off too. I haven't the foggiest idea why we were doing it. Then again, we were known to umm....put the BIG plastic Cowboys & Indians in the leaf pile fires and watch them melt. I'm sure our parents loved us...I actually don't know if they knew about that or not. :rotfl:

I just know we had a blast with it and spend hours doing such crazy nonsense.

Ha! We used to pop the heads off the barbie and ken and fill them up with water. They made good squirters! However, there is something morbid about that.

I allowed Barbie and Ken, I even had Barbie's less popular friends (there was one I didn't like so she was always the hoochie who tried to make off with Barbie's husband) However, Ken was thrown aside when G.I.Joe came into town.

Most of my daughter's Barbies ended up naked within a few hours of being opened so I didn't have to worry about the risque clothing :rotfl:

I have two boys and you just described my house! We have fun with Nerf guns! If I had girls, I would allow Barbies. I played with them as a child and it was fun. I always lost her shoes though. I think my mom sucked them up in the vacuum.

I am the poster that originally suggested Nerf guns in the other thread.

And YES, we have plenty of Nerf guns here. DS has even had a few Nerf gun parties here.

We used to have plenty of Barbies as well...but DD16 outgrew them and they got sold in our yard sale.

We also have about a dozen Super Soakers here. Do you know they even sell them in the SAB Poolside gift shop? We bought DS & DH a couple of Super Soakers there a few years ago. They had a blast with them in SAB.
