I was looking at some "spinner" (4 wheels) luggage and liked what I saw...even my 4yo daughter was able to carry the luggage w/o assistance. They glide easier w/o having to drag the luggage behind you.

However, I've heard that since the wheels 'stick out' on most of the models, they can come off, esp as they are being thrown around at the airports. This of course, leaves the passengers w/o wheeled luggage when they most need it.

Sooo....anyone have spinner luggage they can recommend (or not)?

We have spinner luggage and I did not pay a lot for it and have had no problems with it - we really love the luggage and how easy it is to transport through the airports.

Great! This is what I'm hoping to hear...what brand did you purchase?

I got Protocol from JCPenney (the more expensive version with a higher denier rating but was bought on clearance). It's been on numerous plane trips (including a trip to Israel back in March) along with numerous car trips, and I haven't had any problems. Tuesday Morning is also a good place to look.

oh, thanks for the info! We have a Tues Morning and I was just looking at jcp.com to see what they have.

DD has the Samonsite Spinner - probably 24". She's taken it on several trips to Europe and Hawaii. It works great and is holding up well. The only downside - it's heavier and holds less than conventional 24" luggage.

ahhh, that makes sense...if for no other reason than it's adding two more wheels and parts and taking up that space. Thx.

I have two different Protocol sets purchased from JCPenney. I have had no problems and they have been to Hawaii, Florida, D.C., Vegas, and a cruise over the last couple of years. I ordered one set from JCPenney online outlet and I bought the other set from the store using one of those $15 off coupons when it was on sale.

We have replaced all of our suitcases with the Samsonite Spinners and I would never go back to any other kind of wheels! My dh travels a lot for work, so his luggage is used several times a month and we have never had any issue with the wheels coming off. When we went to Disney last year, it was so much easier to walk with the suitcase beside me than trying to drag it behind me, the same for when I took a trip to Vegas. This year we bought 2 more to take on our vacation. Most of them were purchased at Kohls when they ran them on sale and I had a 30% off coupon. The first couple we bought at JCPenney when they had them on sale. I really think they are worth it. Another plus is that if they get damaged, we can take them to the new Samsonite Outlet Store in our area and have them sent in to be repaired.

I'm also a huge fan of the spinners! All of my luggage are now spinners and they've held up really well. I have Dockers and got each piece at Kohl's when they were on sale. I've travelled to Europe and Disney and not a lick of trouble. I also would not go back to non-spinners! :)

I bought a "Traveller's Choice" hard sided spinner suitcase after Jetblue broke the handle of my never used before Atlantic wheeled luggage!:scared1: I know it was not too expensive, as I don't expect a lot of care by airlines!

You could also just buy her a size that can fit in an overhead bin...then you really won't have to worry about baggage handlers messing the wheels up.

Thanks guys for the advice!! I think I'm going to :lovestruc the spinner.

We just looked a a protocol today at JCP that we are considering...

I also found a Samsonite at Burlington Coat Factory that we are also considering.

We're looking at getting two 25-26" and two 20-21" suitcases...so DD will get the carryon and we'll have the mid-size plus one more carryon.

Sorry to say I am one who has had my check in spinner luggage wheel chopped off by the airline. It must have gotten stuck on something or another piece of luggage dropped hard on top of it because it took off the wheel and the casing around it leaving a big hole in the bottom of the suitcase. I loved that luggage too and sadly a wheel missing is not covered by the airline so they would not reimburse for the loss.

That was my check in piece that got destroyed but I do have two peices of carry on spinner luggage. I love how much easier it is to take through the airport and with it being us who is putting it in the overhead bin we know it won't be destroyed. We replaced the check in with a new one with in line wheels that won't come off easily.

Thanks and sorry you had a hole in your suitcase -- what did you do? Hopefully it was on your return...

Which bag did you buy with in-line wheels to check in?

Unfortunately the airlines have been TORTURE on many sets of luggage that we have. We have never had the wheels come off yet though (knock on wood). We LOVE the spinner luggage. It moves so much better and if by chance they break the handles (which has happened to us twice now), you can still push or pull the luggage along easily with 4 wheels. We have a cheaper brand purchased through Kohls and also a more expensive brand (Heys) that was purchased from ebags...and we have not had good luck with that brand at all. The wheels weren't the problem though. I'm debating about rather we should buy more expensive luggage and hope it holds up better to the damaging treatment the airlines dish out. But I hate to spend a lot and have it trashed anyways. :confused3

We have the spinner luggage from Target - the Zurich line by Swiss Gear. Love the spinny wheels, have never had a problem with them.

It is the most durable luggage we have owned so far. :lovestruc

We travel a fair bit - couple dozen flights per year.. We are hard on luggage, and so are the airlines. We were replacing 2-3 pieces of luggage each year - (not cheap stuff either)- until we got the Swiss Gear suitcases from Target. We were on a trip, our suitcase had been destroyed, and needed a replacement to get everything back home - so we just went to Target and got what they had. That suitcase has held up better than anything we've ever had before and we were getting ready to invest in some Tumi luggage ($$$$) -- that was atleast 3 years ago! We've gone through Delsey Helium (didn't last 9 months) a couple pieces of Samsonite, Atlantic and Ricardo. We've had busted wheels, broken handles, the inside plastic liner of the suitcase crushed.. our Swiss gear even still has all it's zippers!

Go for the spinner.. and I can personally recommend the Zurich line by Swiss Gear at Target..

We just got the Samsonite spinner luggage as a wedding present and LOVE it! My mother-in-law got the set at Tuesday Morning for a great price. You should definitely check there.

I have one 20 or 21" spinner bag, and I love it. We don't check luggage -- ever -- so I can't comment on what it'd look like after a flight.

This is what we are thinking too -- buy $$$ luggage or just find a cheaper one that holds up well. We went to:

Burlington Coat Factory
Tuesday Morning
Kohl's
Bed, Bath and Beyond
JCP
Target
Sears

Then I did a few hours of research on-line...waaaaay overthinking this, I'm sure.

I ordered some luggage on ebags, since they had the extra 25% off and free return shipping. I got an American Flyer Quattro 3 piece set. This was highly rated on-line from consumers and some travel experts (for the "cheaper" luggage -- less than $200 for 25", 21" and duffle).

I also saw great recommendations for the Samsonite Sahara Brights (except for marks on outer surface)...but one piece alone was $170!

We were going to go with Samsonite Mobility 2 for $80 from BCF but some reviews on-line were pretty bad. But then others were good (like I'd expect). That will be our backup if the American Flyer doesn't work out.

thanks for this info! I had seen this one at Target and liked it EXCEPT for the 'puky brown' color...just my personal taste...I have a 6 month old baby...'nuff said! :rotfl2:

Yep, we checked there...they only had single pieces of luggage...no two from the same brand. We want to get all luggage the same to make it easier to find/keep track of.

This is my eventual goal -- no checked luggage...but with 2 small kids and lots of electronics and accessories, we aren't there yet. I asked DH if he would mind shipping down some of the extra stuff and he said he didn't want to do that with any of the electronics -- ok, for diapers and baby food.
