I was reading the thread on Tinkerbell being mean in the Peter Pan cartoon (I agree) and someone mentioned that none of the girl characters were really portrayed well in it.

But has anyone noticed the opposite trend in kids' media today? - The girls being portrayed as clever and in charge, and the boys and men as buffoons?

The most recent example that sticks in my head is Monsters vs. Aliens. We took DS, and he seemed to like the movie, but I hated how the male characters were all portrayed as evil, shallow, or idiots - even the president!

DS has asked me several times (before this, about other TV shows or even in the neighborhood) why the girls always win, or the girls always get to be first, or....

I'm not belittling any injustice that was done to girls in the past, but I don't think we can undo a wrong to one group by doing the same wrong to another.

I have noticed the same thing. And as a mom of only boys it bothers me..something else for example is kids clothing..the girls get clothes with sayings like "sweet" "princess" etc and for boys stuff like "nothing but trouble". I don't understand that at all. I am raising my boys to be polite, kind, gentlemen..not some idiot that does nothing but play videogames.

ITA. Especially in commercials. The mom is knowledgable about everything, and the dad is a bumbling idiot who eats dog treats. Can't we find a happy medium?
