I was getting ready to make spice cake for my DD's birthday, but the recipe alternative that I've alway made is not longer on the box. That recipe used applesauce. Thought that maybe someone here used that recipe and thought to copy it. Or maybe someone has the old box. I looked on the BC website, but I don't see that variation. :guilty:

Thanks!

Are you looking for the entire recipe or just the applesauce alternate? When baking with applesauce I always just replace the oil with same amount of applesauce. I use this all the time with many different recipes. I never do anything else different. If you need the recipe, sorry, I can't help you there.

It was the actual recipe that differed. I know that it also had some oil in it, but in addition it also had some applesauce. Seems that there was also some other differences. That variation also added cinammon to the frosting, which is easy enough to do of course. My DD usually makes the recipe for me for my birthday, so I don't think that I've actually ever made it.

Any luck, mtblujeans?

Well, I don't see anything in my recipe box. I sometimes cut the recipes off the box and just throw them in there. The guys are in town and will stop off at the grocery store. I called them and asked them to pick up a box if they see the recipe on it. We'll see what they come home with....

Otherwise, the only other thing I know to do is to email Betty Crocker and ask them for the recipe...? :guilty:

Maybe I'll do a half and half recipe today and then e-mail them, assuming that mtblujeans doesn't have any luck. The current variation that they have on the new boxes has apple pie filling, which might be good, but I know my DD wouldn't like the chunks... Kids, even 18yo ones. :teeth:

I'd like to have the recipe, even if I don't have it for today. Love spice cake! :teeth:

The guys brought home a box with that apple filling recipe on it.....oh, well. I have been search the 'net for more than an hour and I can't find anything. I must be looking in the wrong place! Post something on the cooking board before you give up. Don't forget that there is an '800' number on the box that you can call next week, too.

Please post it here when you find it....I don't like to lose recipes, either!

I found this recipe for an applesauce cake using a Betty Crocker yellow cake mix ~ it uses applesauce and oil....maybe you could substitute that amount of applesauce and oil into your spice cake....?

1 package Betty Crocker SuperMoist yellow cake mix
1 1/4 cups applesauce
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 eggs
Powdered sugar, if desired

1. Heat oven to 350°. Mix cake mix and remaining ingredients except powdered sugar in ungreased square pan, 9 x 9 x 2 inches, with fork, scraping corners frequently, until
blended (some lumps may remain). Scrape sides with rubber spatula; spread batter evenly.
2. Bake 32 to 36 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Run knife around side of pan to loosen cake. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Store
covered in refrigerator.

High Altitude (3500 to 6500 feet): Heat oven to 375°. Use rectangular pan, 13 x 9 x 2 inches. Add 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour. Bake 30 to 35 minutes.

I chickened out and used the plain recipe on the box. Was scared that if I fiddled with it that I would mess up her birthday cake and she'd never let me live that down. Like the time my mother messed up my brothers cake probably 40 years ago. :rotfl:

I will e-mail or call Betty Crocker so I'll have the recipe for mext time. Thanks for all your help!

I just called and spoke to a representative. He said you would substitute the applesauce for the same amount of oil (1/3 cup) and remove the oil altogether but use the same amount of water and eggs. Does that sound right?

He said they removed the recipe from the box because the subbing of applesauce for oil does not really make the cake lower in fat. :confused3

Wow, thanks for calling! I'll have to ask my DD if that sounds right since she's usually the one to make it. I thought that there were some other differences, too, but I could be wrong. Maybe I'll send an e-mail inquiry and see of I get the same info.

How do they figure that the recipe would not be lower in fat? :rotfl:

BTW, when I told her that someone in Montana was trying to figure out this cake variation and even bought a cake mix hoping the recipe was there she was very impressed! :teeth:

The other cake turned out fine, but I think that the applesause recipe was better, but it's hard to compare when they are not side by side.

Thanks again! Linda

When you posted that they had removed the recipe from the boxes, I felt kinda' panicked! I never wrote that recipe down either!! I guess they figure since the eggs don't change, they can't really qualify it as low fat. :confused3

I would also like to know what they tell you by email....just to make sure. Thanks, Linda! :wave2:

Is this it? I have it on a card, so I'm not sure where it came from.

Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake

1 box spice cake mix
3 large eggs
1 1/4 cups applesauce
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1 cup raisins (optional)

Frosting
1 container prepared vanilla frosting
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 13 x 9 pan.
In a large bowl combine cake mix, eggs, applesauce and oil and beat at medium speed for 3 minutes. Stir in nuts or raisins, if desired.

Bake for 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted into middle of cake comes out clean.

Cool in pan for 20 minutes, then remove from pan and cool completely on rack.

Frosting
In a small bowl mix frosting and ground cinnamon until completely mixed and frost cooled cake.

I think so!!! Thanks!

mtblujeans and I will be making spice cake... :teeth: We still have one piece of my DD's birthday spice cake and then I'll be making more...

I recall that the other recipe had raisins/nuts. Not that I ever added them (picky kids...), but they sure do sound good.

And I was pretty sure that there was oil and applesauce, so it's probably the one.
