spending on souvenirs

I'm glad to have seen this thread, as I'm sitting here in the middle of the night with insomnia. I am kind of a cheapskate anyway and I know that my cheapskate DH will have a hard time coping if we spend a lot on "extras", so I've been trying to plan for it. After all I want him to enjoy it and be glad that we went. And I'm hoping to convince him to take us back each year in the future or at least every other year and you can't even imagine how hard it was to convince him to go this time. It got to the point that I had started mentioning that if he really didn't want to travel at all, EVER, then maybe we should consider me and the kids going without him.

I know from reading these posts that I need to be a little more realistic and be prepared to spend at least 200 dollars. But I'm also still glad that I've been preparing in advance. I have a litte bit of money hidden away that DH doesn't know about to cover part of it. And I started talking to my kids about it awhile back to explain to them the huge amount of stuff that we might all be tempted to buy while we are there. I told them that it is a trip for fun, but that we can't just throw responsibility to the wind. So we came up with a plan that the oldest started getting more allowance and the younger two started getting the same amount and they saved 60-80% of it each week. Now they each have some savings to draw from and are mentally prepared that they can spend some of their own money but have to try to restrain themselves from asking us to buy a lot, when they run out.

Along the way, they have a few times tried to convince me that they shouldn't have to keep saving such a large percentage of their allowance, usually by saying that 20 or 30 dollars would be enough for Disney so why should they have to keep saving more. I had just about decided to tell them they were right and change the game on them to where they would still have to keep saving most of their money, but should only take a small portion of it with them. Now, I think I'll advise each of them to be glad that they've got a savings account going and to preserve that, but to also take at least 50 dollars with them on the trip.

I saw a mention on the board yesterday that someone found some really neat Disney stuff at the dollar store and got some to take along for treats, rather than spending on similar small items at the park. I thought that was pretty smart. I'm sure the same or similar items at the parks would be at least 4 dollars and maybe 12 or more. I've done the same kind of thing by buying deaply discounted clearance Disney t-shirts and hiding them away for our trip. So I might go see if the Dollar Tree near me has the same type of stuff in stock.

I feel prepared. But I've still got to face the actual trip with all of Disney's fantastic temptations! I wonder how we'll do with it? Especially the kids. Can they wait and not spend all their money on the first day, without me having to put my foot down? I might not be willing to do that. I'd rather not be the bad guy in that particular scenario, but then again, if they do spend it too quick and then realize that there is something else that they would rather have (and then decide that it means the world to them in that childlike way), will I have the will power to just let them learn the lesson rather than wanting to help make them feel better?

Ok, I am now ashamed of my reckless spending, but in the interest of research and a balanced response to the OP, I added up my receipts from my 6 night stay in August for me and DH , and on souvenirs/gifts alone it came to:

$800.25!

On top of that, I spent $400 on food and drink (think it was World Showcase alcohol personally :teeth: )and I was actually on the dining plan. My name is Fizz13 and I have no control over money at Disney!! :guilty:

Sounds like we need a support group ;) . Sounds like Keebles would join us. Don't feel too bad I still out spent you. :sad2: I can't let my DH see this thread if he knew people could spend a week there and only spend $200, the complaining would never end. He gets that from his DF they can spend a couple of days there and not buy one thing not even a postcard. :sad2:

I'm the wrong person to ask on this one. My spending goes into the outer orbit with I'm at Disney. Vacations are the one thing we splurge on, no limits. My DH just dreads going with me to DTD!!! He's happy if I get out of the Christmas store with less than $100 spent. I would say a conservative amount for a 10 day trip is around a $800-$1000. I will admit that a fair amount of that is xmas gifts for friends and family. Lots of Dis-lovers in the family, so that makes xmas shopping pretty easy.

One of the biggest mistakes DH ever made was taking me to WDW during the holiday season last year. So many holiday souvenirs I had never seen befroe and just had to have!! :goodvibes

Between food and souveniers I spent $1,500 last year. But this year I'll have DDE, and won't have to buy as many pins, since I will (try to) limit myself to special ones, like the ones for MVMCP.

Thats an expense I forgot. I buy pins off ebay for a couple of bucks each to trade when I get to Disney with the cms. ( we don't buy the cheap pins that no one wants to trade for.) So I count that as a Disney expense even though I buy them before we go.

Just glad I'm not the only one :teeth:

I let my boys pick out two things for $20 each and they were happy with this. They also earned their own money before going.

All in All with a family of 4 we spent about $250.

I'm definitely in on it! That's still no where near what I spent either! I work two jobs and tons of overtime to be able to go hog wild when I'm at Disney (and boy do I).

I've been tempted for years to write to Disney and complain because they don't have carts in the stores...those baskets just don't do it! But I have discovered that when you fill a basket you can take it to a counter and get another and fill it and so on, then you can check out when you get a few built up...saves tons of time!

I'm among the big spenders. Our last trip was for six nights and we spent just over $700. We're going in December for 8 nights. I only have $500 "budgeted" for souvenirs, but I have another $468 built up on my Disney rewards that's for "extras". Fortunately DD has saved $180 of her own so that should help lessen DH's and my load a little! DH says this will be our last trip to Disney (he's Disney'd out :confused3) so I really plan on spending! Plus, I've lost almost 30 pounds and none of my Disney clothing fits anymore. My question is, does anyone make lists of things they want to buy? I do!

This year I will be buying Christmas presents at WDW, so everyone has given me their wish lists. I typically buy myself almost a new wardrobe anyway, so that's always on the list (I don't own a single shirt that's not Disney other than scrubs), but this year I'm gonna focus more on sweatshirts and I need a new jacket. I usually also buy up any Donald Duck I see (that I don't already have), so that's a basline staple too. But this year's list is more diverse...couple more big figs, pins, antenna toppers character drawings, Stitch stuff, ornament stuff, bathroom stuff (I'm gonna make a Mickey bathroom), WL throw and Lincoln Logs, and just general knick-knacks (key chains, pens, cups, notepads, etc). That's pretty much all I can think of off the top of my head right now (my list isn't close).

I'd say it depends on your taste and what you want when you go down... My husband and I spent roughly $400 last time. I don't know where it went, and we were on the dining plan. 10 years ago (lol) my mom and dad took us to Disney along with $500 dollars and that was for meals and souvineers for a family of 5. :)

Then I spent another $350 after that on pins.

Oooh, glad I'm not the only one who spends over $300 on pins EVERY time I go to Disney! :rotfl2: I have lanyards full of pins all over my house!

How much is right for you is really going to depend on what types of souvineers you want.

When I go on a solo trip, for 8 days/7 nights I find $200-300 works, and that's accouning for one or two large items ($50-60 each), a few pins, a few mid-priced ($15-25) gifts, and one or two odd items (a book, or something that catches my eye I didn't plan on).

There is another thread going on about people and their shopping lists, perhaps that can give you a better idea of what's available and what you may want.
