We'll be taking my nephew with us on our upcoming trip to Universal. He and DS are both young adults, so they'll be off on their own part of the time, but they're also at that "poor student" age, so MIL mentioned wanting to give him some spending money to bring along. - She asked me for an idea of how much, and I haven't been in about four years, so I didn't have a ready answer for her.

If you've been recently, what would you suggest for treats and souvenirs? (We'll be there three days, and we'll take care of actual meals. I'm just thinking random snacks/butterbeers and some money for shopping. - He's been to Disney years ago, but it will be his first time at Universal.)

If staying on-site, could give charging privileges

In lieu of cash, they sell gift cards. Locally, in grocery stores right beside the DisneyOnes

IMO bare minimum of $100 each

prices are approx, including tax, from memory:

butter beer (not my thing) $9

refillable drink Cup in the parks $20
Daily refills $13

Tshirt $30-$40
Hoodie $60

I agree with @keishashadow

Most of the treats we indulge in cost between $5-$10 on average. Of course some are more expensive than that but those are our averages. My young adult son likes to purchase t-shirts when there… especially the Margaritaville ones which I believe are around $30.

Of course, one can easily spend a fortune. If they're into Harry Potter, a $70 interactive wand can give a lot of fun in-park and is easy to pack. And at least one butterbeer is de rigueur even if they then decide they don't like it.
