Spencer's Gifts in the Mall? Huh??? WT....

Yeah, but that was kept in the back of the store with the black lights and the posters (I was a teen/adult in the 70's I remember that stuff).

Then they had the semi-dirty stuff and the really stupid gag items...like "fart in a can"

up front of the store was the regular stuff, jewelry, things to decorate the room, etc. Heck, I was even able to get my kids some NSync stuff there not all that long ago. I haven't been in one in awhile cause it just looked like so much trash last time I went in one.

Same here. I was a customer of the store back in those day and I remember havign to pass all the G and PG rated things to get to the good stuff in the back.

I went to Spencers last month and I was surprised what they had out in the front of the store and how little regular stuff they have in there anymore.

We RARELY go into a mall, but when we do, my boyfriend likes to go in there to look for the exclusive Nightmare Before Christmas and Pirates stuff they sell. I REFUSE to go in, I will either wait out in the mall or in another store. He is probably only in there 3 minutes - tops - but I still will not go in.

I just think that store is icky. It used to be soooo different.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't mind Spencer's. I actually think that some of the items you guys have mentioned (like the breast suspenders) are funny.
:duck:
Would I let DS in there unsupervised? No. But that's because I'd probably be in there with him, doing this: :rotfl2:

See - it's not that I dont think the stuff is funny. It is. When my son saw the Breast Suspenders, feeling uncomfortable I said "oooo! A stocking stuffer" to him. :rotfl:

The thing is this - funny or not - this place is not an adult store, it's marketed to teens, and kids. And being marketed to teens, this is a pre-porno shop, and it's really kind of sick, IMO.

Spencers was always edgy, kinda hippieish in the 70's. Had an X-rated area, lava lamps, black light posters, that sorta thing. Now they're really pretty much a porn shop in the mall.

But I'd be lying if I didn't say I go in and have a laugh. ;)

Am I the only one here who's mom didn't let them go in spencers???? When I was dropped off at the mall she would threaten to never bring us back if she found out we went in there.

Yeah, I couldn't believe the stuff they have right out in the open for all ages to see. DS and I were in there looking around and then I see shelves of PeePees and such. Oh my gosh! When I used to shop there in Jr. high and high school it was fun for stuff like fake vomit and rubber poop (the innocent stuff). If they want to sell that stuff they should have a private area that says " no one under 18 allowed".

The Spencers in one of the malls around here is in a corner position. It used to have windows that have now been "boarded" up. The entire exterior is supposed to look like it is an alley with graffiti. Pretty cheesy. They also created a merchandise wall that you have to walk around to actually get into the store which, with the boarded up windows, effectly hides most of the store from the mall. I never really cared for the store when I was younger, but did go in last year looking for some kind of innocent teen room decor - door beads. I was also surprised by how different it was from the last time I had been there. It is definitely trying to appeal to the fifteen-year-old boy.

we went in there last week to get the LCR game (way over priced) - the place was packed with pre-teens and young teens. I have no problem with the merchandise - we got a chuckle out of a few things - but I think it is inappropriate for that age group!

DD9 wants to go in at Halloween - they do get in some cool Halloween stuff, but we have to say no!

I used to go into spencers. The blacklight stuff and the posters my kids wanted to see. I had a lava lamp not too long ago. lol

They took the spencers out of the mall where I work a while ago.

Spencer's is not exactly a classy boutique!

However, I do browse in there. It has a "trainwreck" appeal, I can't look away!

I went in there as a kid (as young as grade school !) and thought the back of the store was sooo cool with all the blacklights and lava lamps, etc. The fact that the stuff was for the hippie/drug culture was totally lost on me. I just thought the colors were pretty, LOL! It was like a funhouse to me!

We used to take the bus to the mall and my mom would say the same thing....first place we headed for-Spencers and Jolly Joint!

There was an actual store called Jolly Joint? :rotfl2: I can just imagine what they sold in there.

Yup! It was in the back of the Home Decor store in the mall. It sold all kinds of drug paraphernalia -rolling papers, roach clips etc.. and black light posters. It was a typical head shop type place.

I went to the mall last weekend and had some time to kill so I popped into Spencers because they used to have some cool stuff. I haven't been to one in years. The very front part of the store was all the music related stuff. Then maybe 10 feet in, everything changes. I couldn't believe all the adult things they had! At least at ours, you have to pass the 5 or so aisles of adult items to even get to the lava lamps. I saw a bunch of early teen girls looking at candy underwear. I wanted to slap it out of their hands and cover their eyes. They were way too young to even think about purchasing that.

I remember that store! Was it the mall in Massapequa?....I can't remember the name of it.

Around Halloween, I made the mistake of popping in there to check out some masks and things.

My jaw hit the floor when a pair of sisters, maybe 4 & 6 years old, were playing with, shall we say a "feminine muscle vibration product" shaped quite realistically, like a not so feminine body part. As if this wasn't bad enough, they were RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR MOTHER, who didn't seem to care one bit - she knew what they were playing with. I had to do a double take - it was surreal.

And, it (as well as the dozens and dozens of similar adult-themed merchandise) was very accessable to anyone of any age and any height - right out on the shelves.

I don't know what shocked me more - the fact that they were sitting right there, or the fact that mom didn't care that her daughters were playing with a plastic hoo-hah.

Needless to say, I high-tailed it out of there. I'm no prude, but there's a time and a place for this type of thing, and it's not around children.

YES!!! It was in the back of the store called Home Decor. Boy we loved that store! I used to buy roach clips to hang on the end of my suede "hippie hat"
