 What did I just see?

I've had little patience for Harry's petulance over the past two years but were I him, appalled would not be a strong enough word. Why on earth would anybody conceive of this film - noted from the onset to be entirely conceived in the imaginations of the creators but yet when focused around such an evocative historical figure, bound to imprint on many as fact? Why imagine Diana to be such a complete nutter and practically everyone around her utterly irredeemable monsters? Why portray a relationship with her children so dysfunctional and inverted that it's practically physically painful to watch? I feel sorry for the Princes; all the Royals actually - anybody who was depicted in this hideous piece of dreck.

Agreed.

”Harry was so disturbed by the film that he’s considering avoiding big events such as the Oscars out of concern that he might come into contact with Stewart.”

Interesting that his loyalty to his mother wasn’t extended to the rest of his family. It seems hypocritical that he’s upset about this when he did worse to his own loved ones via the Oprah interview and ongoing disparagement.

I don't really get all of the drama that seems to follow anyone associated with the UK royal family. It appears they want to be in the spotlight only if the media portrays them in the way they approve. Producers make lots of movies that are supposed documentaries but often are slanted toward their view of reality. Doubt anyone should be surprised by that. I think most public figures realize that some media coverage will portray them in a positive light while others won't.

No one forced him to do that Oprah interview or say the things he did. Even if Oprah approached him about doing an interview he could have just said no. Thought part of the reason he & his wife moved to CA was to no longer be in the public spotlight??? Doubt anyone attends the Oscars to be lowkey.

I haven't seen Spencer yet, don't think I will. But what I do think we can use is a more realistic picture of Diana. She is almost treated like a saint by some media. She has turned into a myth, while she was a human.
Similar like with Marilyn Monroe, the sex bomb versus the intellectual woman who married Arthur Miller.

So any movie with a realistic representation of events amd people would be welcome.

Your description sounds good to me.
I had no desire before, but I think you just convinced me to see the movie. popcorn::

If Meg and Harry really want to avoid Stewart, or anything to do with this movie, it would be ridiculous for them to attend the Oscars this year.

At least @ronandannette is Canadian so it’s more relevant.
What's more relevant? Are Americans not allow to talk about the royals? I thought from past threads it was the Canadians and people in the UK who cared far less about the royals than Americans (who have been pointed out by people to have a weird fascination with them whereas others are more like shrugging over them).

It's a big strange don't you think to turn this conversation into a nationality contest

To some people celebrities, or wannabe celebrities are off limits when it comes to mocking or speaking negatively about them. We aren’t allowed to have opinions on anyone who chooses to live their life in the public eye, who make announcements and do press releases or interviews with other celebrities or write tell all books or post on Twitter. After all we don’t know them 😂

So I just put the movie on my hold list for the library a few weeks back, I thought I remembered reading about Kristen's performance as Diana was one they thought she did well like the speech and mannerisms.

On Rotten tomatoes the critics gave it an 83% so far but the audience didn't like it nearly as much with a 52%. To the OP's point this is the main tag for the critics "Spencer can frustrate with its idiosyncratic depiction of its subject's life, but Kristen Stewart's finely modulated performance anchors the film's flights of fancy"

IMDb has the users giving it an 6.8/10 right now.

I think any one of the royal family has been vocal about representations of themselves in media. Didn't The Crown get similar treatment? On a practical level no one wants a poor image of themselves out there so I'm less vested on what Harry himself is saying. Pretty sure it's just in the minds of the royals they want the narrative to be controlled, whatever that narrative is in their minds, it's that they don't want someone else reflecting something different, something they've taken time to build up a certain image and keep it that way.

IDK the movie sounded interesting what I saw it was coming out. I'll still watch it but at least I know it's presenting a different image than what I'm used to seeing of Diana.

I don’t really have an interest in seeing the film. I agree that it would be nice to see a more accurate portrayal of not only Diana, but the family in general. However, to be honest, I doubt there would be enough drama to create interest. The most salacious details were all covered in the press already, and since the royals are the same mix of good and bad qualities as the rest of us, I don’t feel there is a specific villain or victim in the story. They all could have behaved better, in my opinion.

I do have sympathy for the family of any famous person who is sensationalized to the extent Diana is. The farther we are removed from the actual events, the less factual the films and “documentaries” appear to be. I can understand a family member not wanting to be around anyone associated with the film, whether it’s the actors, writers, producers, or director.

I mean, they do live in the US now.

I wonder what happened to that other Canadian who always used to chime in on these threads. @kimblebee I think it was......

Kristen Stewart is an actress playing a role. Be appalled at the creators/producers/director of the film, not the “working stiff.”
Totally. The piece I quoted wasn't intended to imply that I share the hostility towards the actress; just to express my disgust with this wretched piece of work. And I actually feel quite sorry for whoever played the pathetically sinister and incredibly chinless equerry guy... :scared:

I only watched it after hearing a sound-byte about Harry & Meghan and the the Oscars and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'd love to hear what others think, after they've actually seen it too.

It's impossible to believe that this movie is it. The events are entirely contrived (and it says so, right up front) and every character is written as one-dimensional caricature. It's humorless and surreal and there's not one likable character in the entire thing or one single moment that seems even slightly normal/human enough to identify with. Diana herself doesn't even evoke my sympathy because her behavior and reactions to situations are portrayed so repulsively. It also doesn't help that dream/fantasy sequences are employed often enough that it leaves one wondering what was intended to be "real" and what wasn't. :confused3

There is no balance or subtlety in this movie - the entire rest of the Royal family is devoid of humanity, played as stereotypes of all the very worst things we've ever heard about them in relation to Diana. And they are, in fact, rather minor characters in this story...most of it takes place inside Diana's own head and the dialogue/interaction with other characters is minimal.

There is one scene with Diana and the Princes that has a glimmer of the warmth and devotion she was famous for as a mother. But it devolved badly into being a set-up for her placing responsibility on 12-year-old William for monitoring her behavior and keeping her from the brink. Utterly heart wrenching and I don't believe for a minute any loving mother with a shred of her faculties left would put their child in that position.
