the hobby or practice of exploring caves

Wow, I would have thought that was some sort of bodily fluid. :crazy2:

Learn something new everyday. :)

Wow, this has always been a part of my vocabulary, I don't know why.

It's pronounced, for some reason, SPLUNKing

everything I know about spelunking, I learned from The Hardy Boys :teeth:

My landlord's son was killed in a freak spelunking accident. I don't know much else about it, but it was shame.

Don't you guys ever visit caves? Spelunking (spee-lunk-ing) is lots of fun when done without the aid of modern conveniences! Just blow out your candle (Make sure you can light it again first), and you will see TRUE total darkness! I'm gettin too old for this "fun" anymore though!:p

Not plentiful around here. Not sure I would anyways, I hate bugs, and well, to me a cave is a bug magnet! :earseek:

Things I hate:

Bugs
Dark
Stink
Bats - and with bats comes...
Doodie
Things that can bite/eat me
Dirt
Dead Stuff

Things a cave has:

Bugs
Dark
Stink
Bats - and with bats comes...
Doodie
Things that can bite/eat me
Dirt
Dead Stuff

It appears a cave and I would not get along well.

I'll let you folks in on a little secret... People that explore caves on a regular basis call the activity "caving". To them novices show their limited knowledge of the hobby by referring to it as "spelunking". There's a saying amoung cavers: "Spelunkers are often rescued by cavers."

When I grew up in Indiana we used to do a fair amount of caving in the Winters. In college I was in the university caving club. But now that I live in the rather cave-less Michigan (thanks to the glaciers in the ice age) I only go caving once a year back down to southern Indiana.

It's a fun hobby but, as one poster mentioned, can be dangerous...particularly when people enter caves with disregard to recognized safety guidelines. For a lot more info, see www.caves.org

I've toured the caves in PA, Indian Echo and Crystal Caverns. They are done by guided tour, so you don't have to really squeeze through any tight spaces. We were told about a homeles guy who lived in the cave around the turn of the century. He ended up dying from carbon monoxide poisoning in the cave. No ventilation, with too many camp fires. It was such an interesting experience. I would recommend the tour to anyone. :D
