I'm prolly gonna get flamed for this, but hear goze:
I've got a degree in English and I'm working on my masters in secondary ed in English. Yes, I'll be an English teacher. I'm a total spelling GEEK and can spell just about any "normal" word you throw at me. I used to believe that proper grammar and spelling was a sign of intelligence, but boy was I ever wrong!
My DH is an absolutely brilliant man (gifted IQ), but he can't spell worth a hill of beans. My DS (high IQ) has learning disabilities and can't spell. My DD, not sure if she has LD or not, but she's going through the same struggles! Needless to say, I quickly changed my attitude towards poor spellers.
Oh, and to top that, I was diagnosed with an LD in math (dyscalculia) and I can't get above a 6th grade math level. Can't even balance a checkbook, but I have a relatively high IQ and am excelling in graduate school.
So anyway, my point to all this is (yes there's a point), what irritates me more than poor spelling and grammar in posts (and yes, I definitely notice and cringe at it) are all the language police on the boards! I
hate it when people will tear apart a post and correct someone's spelling and grammar just because that person is saying something they don't agree with. I also hate when people whip out the good ol' dictionary.com and post definitions to words. Drives me nuts! Isn't it wonderful that we have access to such intellectually superior posters?
Although I do have to admit, I think it's absolutely gut-bustingly hilarious when one of the "intellectually superior" posters corrects someone with their own misspellings and improper grammar!
