Spelling Errors!!! *&%^*(&%^&*(%

The one I see here used incorrectly a great deal is "your" in place of "you're". That's not a spelling error--it's a grammatical error but drives me off the mountain!!!!
That's another one!!!

Should've. :)

Yes, spelling and grammer. We all make mistakes, but put them right for god's sake. The thing that really gets me, is people who don't know their "theres", if you know what I mean.

Hee hee. I was typing fast and hit the colon key instead of the end quotes and deleted my "e" in the process. Oops!

ETA: I have never understood why people use elipses throughout their posts instead of the appropriate punctuation...it's just strange...I could understand misusing a colon or simicolon somewhere...but come on...why all the dots...?

I use ellipses all the time. But otherwise, my posts are usually OK...I think. ;)

One of my biggest pet peeves is the grammatical error of using "of" instead of "have"...(;)) as in "I would of gone too."

Your posts are above reproach! :teeth:
I use ellipses a ton here at work (advertising copywriting--we embrace the ellipses and the em dash!) BUT this is what I object to:

So tell me, did I overreact...DH didn't tell me he had plans this weekend...had already told my mom we'd bring the kids down...she was excited...DH wants to go to the game...got in an argument...he hasn't seen my parents in 6 months...why can't he just let it go this weekend...didn't speak to him for 2 days...now he is mad at me...haven't told my mom yet 'cause I don't know if he's going to come or not...should I just let this go...don't know what to think...
and etc!

Typos are excusable, they happen to everyone. But here on these boards are so many people who obviously write like they speak: If it sounds the same, who cares about the spelling. I.e. There, their, and they're, or continues and continuous, or my absolute favourite: Sandles instead of sandals
IMHO language is an expression of culture, not being able to use your own native language shows disrespect for your own culture.

I don't like them in my own posts, and will edit if I notice one, but I could care less if someone else has spelling or grammar errors.

My DH has some trouble with that stuff, some people are just not good in that area, and it would really hurt his feelings for someone to point out his errors in his posts. If he is writing something formal, he has me check for mistakes, but if it is just a post on the DIS, why worry about it. :confused3

I admit that it bothers me, but I refrain from saying anything. I frequently mis-type, and certainly don't want fingers pointed back at me.

My pet peeves that seem to occur frequently on the boards: it is "dining" , not "dinning"; incorrect use of went/gone. (I have went); incorrect use of eat/ate (Have you ate).

Forget to mention that I love the numerous spelling variants of 'definitely' on the boards :rotfl2:

I don't mind a few errors, but when it gets so bad that I can't figure out what the person is trying to say, then I get aggravated.

i reelie cannotte stande it wen peeple spel theengs rong...it gits on mi nurvs ulot!!! yu wuld thenc thes peeple dont use spelchek or haf a dikshunary!!!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It does bother me a little, but hey I'm not perfect either. I wouldn't ever point an error out to someone else if they didn't ask for correction.

Leaving for wdw in 17 days!

It used to bother me until I was blessed with a beautiful son that has dyslexia and dysgraphia. I am now more tolerant of others.

Lori

You do have a good point!

Personally, I don't get upset at typos. An occasional word that is misspelled or used incorrectly also doesn't bother me, as long as I can figure out what the person is trying to say. If it gets too difficult I skip over the post. I'm scared to post this reply--what if I've made some mistakes??? :rotfl:

I would never correct someone--how rude and I don't know why they are making the mistakes they are making (such as Lori pointed out). I'd rather see someone post with occasional mistakes than to feel that they shouldn't post at all.

No, spelling doesn't bother me. Mis-use is amusing sometimes.

what i don't understand is the lack of spaces in some posts.the writer obviously has a space bar.i'm sure there's often good information in these posts.however i cannot finish one and be sure.

Oh thank you, I feel much better now. :goodvibes I was getting scared that people wanted me to stop posting. Clearly that PhD in my user name isn't for spelling. (and really isn't mine, but is DHusbands, who can infact spell and is rather ashamed that I use his name  )

So now I can post with fear of getting flamed. I was rather worried this thread was aimed at me! :rolleyes1

Honestly, that wasn't what I meant at all. (And I was seriously j/k at correcting the person-jokes don't come through as easily on a message board) I only mean when it gets to the extent that I can't read it. Typos are nothing-but when it is every other word in a LONG review-that gets impossible to read and I'm interested in what the person had to say.

It bothers me and I AM an English teacher. I try to teach my students to be careful when writing, and I hope the kids that listen to me carry that habit for the rest of their lives, even on message boards. I have some of the same peeves already mentioned, but one thing that bugs me is subject-verb disagreement (The family are going to WDW) or pronoun-antecedent disagreement ( Each of the kids are going). This may be because I am teaching this stuff right now!
Also, remember you only use an apostrophe in "its" if it is the contraction for "it is"--you would not say "The dog wags it's tail".
I would never say anything to someone either--I did once, and it turned out the poster was a teenager and someone else jumped all over me--I forget what they misspelled but it was REALLY bad for me to open my mouth about it. Since then I just shut up. But thanks for letting me vent about it on this thread!
